Brownie camp with nut allergy...yikes

My DD (8yrs) is going on her first Brownie camp in a few months time. It's one of those residential, bunk-bed dorm type places. For 2 nights. About an hour and a half drive from home. First time away from us, apart from gran's.

She's anaphylactically allergic to all nuts and carries 2 Epipens at all times. She knows how to use the pens, as do all the leaders going.

I'm having a meeting with the leaders well in advance of the trip to go over food and the issues of cross-contamination etc etc. The girls will be involved in cooking and cleaning up.

Brown Owl will send me her Tesco list to 'approve'.

Not scared to admit I'm freaking terrified already. My girl is a sensible, timid wee soul but I know she will love Brownie camp, so saying no now isn't much of an option (and I've bloody paid in full already).

Any help/advice from fellow allergy parents will be very much welcomed!

Hello, I am a parent of a nut allergic cub and an occasional catering helper at camps (the two facts may not be entirely unrelated😉). Sounds like they are taking it very seriously and letting you see the shopping list is good. Our group also reminds all parents that there are epipen-carrying cubs at camp and that no nut products should be brought as snacks. In the kitchen, we all know who the allergic children and keep a particular eye on them and the food we give them.

My bigger concern is usually that my cub won’t eat anything he doesn’t know is ‘safe’ (I think it’s a self-preservation thing) so he survives mostly on bread, crisps and breakfast cereal. I don’t mind this too much as he knows what he can have with these.

I think the thing to remember is that the leaders will be very aware of the risks and will be keeping a very close eye. Do you know anyone who is going to camp that could send you a reassuring text each day? I have been asked to do this by a few parents who are friends of mine before and I don’t mind. (Although now I’m wondering if I’m breaking GDPR doing that...?!)
