4 year old daughter with fever for 4 days

My daughter has had a fever for 4 days now. Started off at 39.5 but is now between 38-39. Has been off school for 3 days as she’s so tired. She has a bit of a cough but it’s not bad, there’s no other symptoms. Have used calpol and nurofen when it reached 39.5 and it bought it down for an hour before going back up again. Haven’t used any for 2 days as I don’t like to use them unless it’s really high. All day today she has had no fever until an hour ago when it came back Confused. Didn’t really want to bother the drs with just a fever. But any ideas how long I should leave it before ringing them? Thanks :)

a fever is a result of an illness not an illness so it will have a cause - does she have pain anywhere, how does her throat look. As it still going I would see a doctor now to be honest

And if she has a fever you can bring it down it will make her feel better

A raised temperature for 4 days has a cause, see a doctor

Personally I would just give paracetamol and wait. Sounds viral and I don’t think a doctor will do anything.

That being said, your doctor will be happy to see her as she’s only small.

My 3yo had exactly the same this week. It went on its own on day 6. Saw docs twice in the mean time but they both said viral

I know it’s not an illness, just couldn’t find a reason for it 🤷‍♀️. I’ve looked in her mouth and looks fine. Asked her if anything hurts and she said no. Said she had a bit of a headache but she’s gone to sleep now. Her temp is only 38.5 at the moment but if she wakes up I’ll give her some calpol 😁

My 5 year old has had this, still getting random temps but has been checked by the doc and there is nothing specific wrong just a virus to wait out.

That’s good to know. Thanks :)

Have you looked behind all of her teeth (use a torch)

DD5 has been like this twice now & each time I completely missed the fact that she was teething!

A huge big adult tooth appeared almost overnight behing her baby teeth Sad

My DS (2.5) is on his second round of this since Christmas, I think it’s just a horrible virus, lots of his nursery friends are off with the same - seems to make his temp skyrocket, but he’s not that poorly (cold symptoms and a bit of a chesty cough this time). As long as there are no other red flags I’d be tempted to ride it out, but go with your instincts - if you’re worried, get her checked!

Lampshadylady · 16/01/2019 18:54

My daughter has had a temp since the weekend although it’s now down to 37.7. It started at 39.8.

I took her to docs and they said it was a virus. They also said not to worry about a fever unless it went on 7 days or even more!

I’ve got 3 children with this. One (5yrs) has been prescribed antibiotics for tonsillitis, one (2yrs) has been assessed but doc happy to carry on monitoring him (he’s end of day 4 now - has glue ear so very prone to secondary ear infections). DD (7) came down with it yesterday and has white tonsils now so probably will get her checked tomorrow. Its decimated DS’s reception class - 15 in the class and so far 9 have it!
