Trying to quit caffeine, again.

I don’t feel good at all.

Woozy and tired and headachey.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I’ve tried to cut the caffeine before but I always end up going back...

Are you cutting out or cutting down?

Doggydoggydoggy · 16/01/2019 17:17

Out.
I haven’t had a single drop all day

If you've gone cold turkey it will be hard. Why are you cutting it out completely?

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 16/01/2019 17:21

You'll have an absolutely cracking headache for a week and then it'll be gone.

HermioneWeasley · 16/01/2019 17:25

The headache is a bastard but it’s the only way to do it.

Doggydoggydoggy · 16/01/2019 17:28

Well, I have tried to cut down before but I’m not very good at it!

So I think cold turkey is the only way for me.

I think my addiction to it is unhealthy, it is no exaggeration to say I get through at least 8 - 10 cups of tea a day.

I drink it at a very unhealthy temperature aswell, literally steaming. No one can understand how I can possibly drink it that hot.

I am worried about possible damage I might be doing to my Esophagus to have it that hot.

Also have severe anxiety disorder (diagnosed by GP at 18) and have wondered more than once if the excessive caffeine might be contributory

Good luck! I have never managed to quit. I cut down alot but recently have been having alot more. Too scared to go cold turkey. Can't stand the headaches. Let us know if you manage to stick with it.

Lucylugs · 16/01/2019 17:54

Would you consider mixing your usual tea with a decaff for a few weeks to ease the headaches and then just go to decaff or something like rooiboos/redbush tea? I got off coffee by mixing proper coffee with barley cup granules. It worked great for me and no headaches.

picklemepopcorn · 16/01/2019 18:33

That's how I cut out caffeine, by 'cutting' my coffee with ever increasing proportion of decaf.

Put the decaf and normal teabags in a container and give them a stir. It will be lucky dip tea!

Aquamarine1029 · 16/01/2019 19:15

Caffeine ABSOLUTELY makes anxiety worse. I cut it out entirely and it helped me tremendously. I went cold turkey and after several days I was fine.

Pineapple90 · 16/01/2019 20:17

I'm cutting down. Found what worked for me was the rule of having none after 2pm. That way I had maybe 3 cups instead of 6. Already notice a difference. Having a big bottle of water to hand helps. I also found some nice non caffeinated teas that I like which I look forward to in the evening like roobois and camomile.

Doggydoggydoggy · 16/01/2019 21:59

Does decaf taste any different to regular?
I’ve never had it.

Yes, have been drinking lots of water.

Oh man. The fatigue!
I am so so tired, I could literally fall asleep right now.
My DH will be home soon wanting to talk to me but I don’t think I have the energy.
I want my bed!

I found a happy medium is that I have 2 cups of regular americano first thing in the morning then all other coffee and tea is decaff. If I have any more then I am so anxious and shaky that I ruin the whole day. PG Tips decaff is fine - it's not quite as good but it's fine.

picklemepopcorn · 16/01/2019 22:31

DH can't tell the difference with decaf. It depends how discriminating you are- if you are drinking it that hot, then I doubt you'll notice!

Almostfifty · 16/01/2019 22:46

I drink decaf tea all the time. It's fine. Try it!

combatbarbie · 16/01/2019 22:51

I have PTSD with anxiety and major sleep disyurbance, I only drink coffee at work (but can be 6 a day) and tea at home. I was prompted to look at myself overall when I went for a pre-op assessment and the lowest BP they could get was 160/113 😯 even though I felt fine.... But some of that is my meds, some white coat syndrome....

Anyways I now drink decaf coffee and jeez I can feel it, not had headaches but I'm knackered and have been in bed at 9.30pm as I literally can't keep my eyes open, have also noticed my sleep is more "restful". My bp on operation today at having only 1 cup of tea at 7am was 120/93 so is a marked improvement in a week!

I find a lot of things anxiety related are a circle....once you break it....ie no caffeine, the anxiety symptoms relax a bit.

BackforGood · 16/01/2019 22:53

I just swapped caffiene for decaff.
I had a headache for about a week, but it is SO much better now.
This was about 15 years ago.
No, de-caff doesn't taste any different. - Well, you get slightly different tastes with different brands like with all teas and coffees, so, just the same as 'with caff', there are some poor ones, some lovely ones, and lots in between.

greenelephantscarf · 16/01/2019 22:54

the tiredness goes awayafter 3 or so days.
take it easy, early bath&bed.
decaff tea is ok, but maybe try some herbal teas? (I'm partial to chai tea)

Autu · 16/01/2019 23:34

Yorkshire Tea decaf tea bags are really good. You can’t taste the difference.

For looseleaf, Canton Decaf English breakfast tea is excellent. Tastes like really good normal looseleaf (make sure it is left to brew for 4-5 mins for lovely strong flavour)

Doggydoggydoggy · 17/01/2019 14:56

Okay, it’s been nearly 24 hours and I haven’t had any!

Still utterly exhausted.

DS went for his nap at 12.30 and I’ve slept the whole time, I’ve woken up now because I need to pick up the other kids soon but I literally could happily go straight back to sleep.

Might try the herbal (caffeine free) vanilla chai I have in the cupboard soon.

Well done. I had lots of fresh juice when I was quitting, carrot apple orange type. The fructose helped with the tiredness. It did take me a month to stop yawning my head off and having early nights where possible but worth it in the end, health wise. Keep going.
