Can anybody recommend a non dairy milk for tea?

I've tried so many and use oatly regularly now, but can't find anything which goes in tea. There's always a residual taste. I've tried black tea, but it's too astringent and I can't get away with it.

Has anybody found anything which works for them?

I've tried a lot of non dairy milks over the years. Most are horrible in tea! The only one I like is the Almond Breeze almond milk. Only this brand and NOT the unsweetened version. Any other almond milk is thin & seperates. The Almond Breeze is lovely and gives a slight hint of creaminess / sweetness to the tea.

You have to use a decent amount as well, otherwise it is a bit thin.

I've tried most of them and not found one that I like in tea. I've just trained myself to drink it black - I find it's more palatable if I brew it weaker than I would when drinking it with milk.

What type of tea are you using? Dusty tea bags like PG tips, Yorkshire 'n the like will taste awful black, they're all blended for the English palate for milk and sugar. Try a whole leaf that has better flavour like a lapsang which is a nice with lemon or a darjeeling.

Oatly have just brought out semi skimmed oat milk. I wonder whether that would work better in tea than the original one?

supercatlady · 16/01/2019 15:25

I did see tea bags the other day designed to taste good with plant milk. PG tips I think.

Hm, I would have suggested oatly.

I quite like the plain unsweetened organic alpro soya as well.
Only the unsweetened organic one.

Slice of lemon is the answer. I find oat milk too creamy but like almond milk in tea. I’ve got used to it so much that I wouldn’t like tea with cows milk any more. But if no fake milk is available I’ve found a slice of lemon works really well for taking the edge of the harshness of black tea.

Thanks for the replies.

I usually drink twinings english breakfast or lady gray.

I've never tried lemon though so I could give that a go.

I do have the oatly semi skimmed, but I can't tell the difference between that and the normal one. It still has a very oaty aftertaste.

I use a squeeze of lemon, not a slice. If you put a slice in your tea you'll get the taste of the rind and pith.

Much better to have a little squeeze of the juice. I gave up milk and sugar in my tea at the same time and it's the only thing that makes it taste nice enough to drink.

I like Alpro Soya Light Fresh in tea. I do use decent amount in tea as others have said.

dramalamma · 16/01/2019 19:54

It sounds like a faff but have you tried homemade? Homemade almond milk is the only one I can drink in tea - it's mild and creamy and neutral tasting so not over powering

I drink unsweetened soya milk in mine. It was a bit strange at first, but now dairy milk in tea tastes weird.
