Is it possible to get pregnant after depo injection given?

Last period began 20th December and lasted 6 days. As my doctor was closed over the Christmas break, I got my depo injection on the 4th jan (day 16 of cycle). I have just read online that unless it is given in the first 5 days of cycle, extra precaution should be used the week following the injection. My nurse never informed me of this.

If I did not have the depo I would have been due a period 2 days ago. This is my first injection in just under a year. Today I am getting brown/pink spotting. I have never bleed or had any spotting on the depo previously. Should I take a test and how long should I wait so it will be 100% accurate.

No. It’s best to take it just after a period I think. But I’m quite chaotic and never organise it correctly. I’ve had it mid cycle lots of times. It’s effective straight away AFAIK.

You're right your nurse should have advised additional protection for the first week, and should have checked when you last had sex and your last period to make sure you weren't already pregnant. A brown discharge can be entirely normal with the depo, especially as you would probably have ovulated. Do you have any symptoms of pregnancy? Tiredness or breast tenderness? I'd phone the surgery and speak to the nurse, they may offer to do a pregnancy test for you? Alternatively, buy one and put your mind at rest, otherwise you're going to get to next month, no period and think you might be pregnant then. Sorry you're having to go through this. Moving forward, it might be an idea to raise it with the surgery as a learning point.

MrsChannkngTatum it's ok to take it mid cycle once you're regularly taking it because it lasts a few weeks longer than they book the appointments for.

For the first injection you need to use protection for a week afterwards unless you have it very shortly after a period.

Havent had a shot in almost a year, so should have been advised to use protection. Had some symptoms. Had 2 days where I have been in tears which is very very unlike me. The spotting, and mild intermittent cramps. Also very fatigued and napping most days.

I'd take a test just to be sure, I have a friend who seems to be able to get pregnant on almost any contraception.

But light bleeding on the depo can also be very common, was the main reason why I stopped taking it and your reactions to conceptions can change over time to.
