I can't sleep at all. I'm in over £1000 rent arrears. I'm a student and it is due a student finance error. Student loans company said I'll be paid properly in six week so I can pay my outstanding rent then, but my lettings office have emailed me today saying that the debt has been passed on to a third party debt company. Am I going to have bailiffs knocking? Will I be evicted? I can't sleep, eat, I feel so ill from this and really don't know what to do or expect. Please can somebody give me some advice? I'm too ashamed to speak to friends or family, which is why I am posting on here.

Go to your university student support team. Take all the evidence with you inc bank statement showing no funds. Most uni’s have the facilities to offer a bridging loan or similar for student finance fuck ups. Your situation is pretty common.

Exactly what @Ourmaud said. You need to approach the uni, your bank, or whomever else and seek emergency funding until your loans come in. Make sure you get slightly more than you need to cover the rent arrears as there will be fees as well.

Ask for help
A trouble shared is a trouble halved. Its a really old saying but it is really true.
Other posters will help with the best people to ask, but you must ask, talk about it, vent, dont bottle up problems.

You poor thing, I was in that position myself many years ago and it is so frightening. I went AWOL & sorted it out from a distance (no-one knew where I lived, it's not so easy to 'hide' nowadays), but it is possible to sort it all out openly.

You need some debt counselling advice. Please do seek it pronto, your uni may have a good advice centre. Plenty get into the same mess.

It doesn't last forever, I promise you. Things will get better.

Thanks for the help everyone. You're all right, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and call into uni tomorrow to speak to somebody. I just have this vision of a big scary bloke kicking me out onto the street!

PS: I really hate these people who pass things on to a collection agency when you have said you will be able to pay in x amount of time.
However, debt collection agencies will also negotiate payment terms, they can be helpful. I don't suppose, as a student, you have many saleable assets and that will be in your favour so they will be glad to get anything.

Are you eating properly, managing other than your rent? Will parents bung you a few quid?

dontfluffthefluffer · 16/01/2019 01:02

Uni has emergency funding loans they can access in a hurry. Call your letting agents and tell them you are going to speak with them. I also hate calling people, it's awful to think about but usually they are just pleased to hear from you and if you try and speak through it all and explain and get the uni to contact them explaining also they can help.

Please don't suffer in silence, this can make it a million times worse in your head.

They will ha e dealt with this before, many times, and know how to deal with it.

Be strong, it will sort itself out. X

Also, if you can. Speak to your parents.

I'd hate for any of mine to feel so stuck and upset and I'd help out in any way I could.
