Anywhere I could get a lemon cake from for Saturday?

Due to a bit of a balls up in communication, I need to try and get hold of a big-ish (~10 inch) cake for Saturday lunch time. Ideally lemon. Could be chocolate. Not Victoria sponge. It doesn't need to be fancy and I've baulked at some prices I've found online from fancy places. Something like the M&S ones would be ideal but they need seven days. Any ideas?

Costco!

Hotterthanahotthing · 15/01/2019 22:42

Could you bake one or see if any friends can,you have a few days so easily doable.you can buy ready made fondant icing in most supermarkets if it needs that too.

FauxFox · 15/01/2019 22:43

Your oven?

The problem with ready made (as I'm sure you've found) is that they're all really small.

Most supermarkets do ready made lemon cake mix and lemon icing. Can you make one yourself? The ready made mixes are foolproof if you follow the instructions.

Fingermoose · 15/01/2019 22:51

Just realised it can be chocolate. Costco will have giant chocolate cakes and most supermarkets have chocolate tray bakes if quantity is what you're after?

MaggieFS · 15/01/2019 23:03

Thanks! Sorting out lunch for a stupid number of people so no time to bake a cake too (and mine always come out flat!).

www.sponge.co.uk/

Local company to me but they do UK delivery next day if you order by 2pm . They are very well known round these parts and yummy cakes! They do lemon sponge (as well as many other little beauties !)

MaggieFS · 15/01/2019 23:05

@Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown @Fingermoose have you ever tried a Costco made to order one? What is the 'white filling'? I assume plain sponge? They're bigger than we need but such a bargain.

Costco! They do loaf tin cakes without icing - lemon drizzle or toffee, I think. And their big round red velvet cake goes down very well here. I don't like their big "sheet" cakes but plenty of folk do.

EasilyDistracted77 · 15/01/2019 23:08

Have a look at Mumsbakecakes.co.uk to find a local baker.

gambaspilpil · 15/01/2019 23:10

I am crap at baking but I manage a lemon drizzle. Really easy to make.

EasilyDistracted77 · 15/01/2019 23:11

Do you live anywhere near a 'Cook' shop? Their desserts look amazing! They do a chocolate cake.

MaggieFS · 15/01/2019 23:14

Didn't know Costco did a loaf tin. Must have missed that Confused

Thanks for all of the ideas.

How about buying about 8 of the loaf shape standard ones and a tub of Betty Crocker lemon icing and assembling on a cake board?

FauxFox · 15/01/2019 23:17

Or just get a few trays of crispy creme donuts or cupcakes instead?

MaggieFS · 15/01/2019 23:17

@gambaspilpil it's not just ability, it's also time. I can bake decent individual things but big cakes aren't my forte and as the priority is lunch for 32 (yes, I am mad) I can't prioritise the cake which I thought someone else was sorting

Make it!

12oz butter
12oz white sugar
12 oz flour
6 eggs whisked
2 lemons zest and juice
1tbsp lemon extract

2 10inch loose bottom cake pans

Heat oven to 190/180 fan/gas mark 5
Cream sugar and butter (baking spread is also ok) add eggs, then zest, juice and extract, then flour mix until smooth (can use mixer but don't over whisk) add a little milk if too thick.
Split between pans, bake for 25-30 mins, if colouring too fast turn oven down a notch - mine cooks pretty fast so I check with a skewer at 22 mins.

Fill with choice of fillings - I use whipped double cream and shop lemon curd for convenience. Ice with ready roll icing for speed or butter cream (you can buy lemon butter cream at Morrison's)

Hope this helps

Ps ingredients cost about £3 plus decoration and fillings. Tastier too

gambaspilpil · 16/01/2019 00:04

MaggieFS 32! Buy them 😂 I am not sure the best place to get them is. I know at short notice I would pop along to a local cafe/ deli and see what they have available. The shop bought tend to be Victoria type sponges or kiddy cakes or tiny little cakes that wouldn’t meet the needs of 32!

OlennasWimple · 16/01/2019 00:12

Does it have to be one big lemon cake?

OlennasWimple · 16/01/2019 00:14

This one from Waitrose looks ideal but is a 7 day order

But if you have a big Waitrose near you, you could phone them and see if they have one in stock already, as they often do. Ditto M&S

Fingermoose · 16/01/2019 17:17

Sorry I've not had a made to order one from Costco - might the white filling be the cream in the middle?

If you go in they usually have some big cakes ready made.

BBInGinDrinking · 16/01/2019 17:27

I'm fussy about cakes, and usually prefer a home bake, but even I can recommend the Costco Lemon Drizzle.

Fingermoose · 16/01/2019 17:37

If you can get to Asda they do a triple chocolate cake that serves 28 (there's a white chocolate one too): groceries.asda.com/product/party-cakes/asda-triple-layer-milk-chocolate-cake/910000255164
