Mirena dilemma

I used to get very heavy periods, so have a Mirena for that (and for contraception).

The last Mirena I had managed to half-expel itself and got stuck in my cervix. This caused severe pain and bleeding and it made me feel dizzy. It had to be removed.

The current Mirena has been in for a year, but for the past six weeks I have had pain (and intermittent bleeding). The GP referred me for a scan, which showed that the lower part of the Mirena is partly inside the cervix (hence the pain).

Arguments for getting it removed:

  • Will hopefully stop the pain.
  • My body seems to expel IUDs, so my uterus might push it further into the cervix (this would be bad).
  • The pain is bad enough that I have not been able to have sex for 6 weeks.

Arguments for leaving it in:

  • The pain might settle down.
  • I don't want to go back to having very heavy periods.
  • I don't want to risk getting pregnant.

Have you thought about a different coil? I have a Jaydess- 3 year coil and a little bit smaller than a mirena. No problems with either of them (I'm on my second) and no periods too :)

It has had every chance to settle down after a year. It hasn't for whatever reason.

My doctor mentioned the Mirena coil to me for heavy periods (I am peri-menopausal and have a large-ish fibroid, which is the likely cause).

Your story and similar ones about Mirena are partly why I am not keen on it and have so far resisted.

It seems though that my choices are Mirena or a hysterectomy, if which Mirena is the most heavily pushed. I'm 52 now though so keep hoping that each period will just be my last and it will all peter out then. Hasn't happened yet though.

FantasticMissFox according to the sonographer my uterus is 'bulky' (possibly due to a fibroid). This might explain why the Mirena coils keep falling out of place. If I had a smaller coil it might fall out completely. Shock

I wonder if I might eventually end up having to have a hysterectomy. My mother suffered terribly with fibroids; she eventually had to have a hysterectomy when she grew a huge one and it turned out to have cancer in it.

Update: the pain was really quite problematic today (making it difficult to work) and the bleeding has started again.

I've made an appointment with the GP to discuss the possibility of getting the Mirena removed.
