Soy Candles

MyGuideJools · 15/01/2019 17:02

My name is Jules and I'm a candle addict 😖
I don't actually buy that many, I get given them as presents but sometimes can't help myself! I've become a bit bored of Yankee, poor scent, sooty etc. I have a woodwork one but the crackling annoys meGrin and I've discovered they are owned by Yankee

I've got some Xmas money which I usually just spend on stuff for the house but I've thought no, I'm going to spend some on myself for once.
So, I would like a nice, reasonably priced soy candle (better for our health)
I had a soy candle for Xmas from 'compass candles" which is lovely but they only do small ones. I would like a large Yankee sized one......
Hit me with your favourite soy candles please....
.

Woodbridge and / or Park Candles are nice, usually about £12 in T K MAXX.

Antiquevintageandrusty · 15/01/2019 17:11

I don’t like woodwick, I don’t mind the crackling but I find the smell fake and overpowering.

Tesco ones are nice and not too strong smelling.I think £5 for a large jar which lasts for ages too!. DP bought me all the stuff to make my own soy candles as a Christmas present so looking forward to trying that as you can adjust the amount of scent you put in!

MyGuideJools · 15/01/2019 17:29

ooh that's interesting doris I quite fancy making my own. I guess you can buy the soy wax on amazon etc but where does the scent come from?

I used to make tons of soy candles but have lost the will recently, too many things going on. Fresh skin is good for wicks and scents. Amazon for bags of wax, very easy, you just microwave the wax on half power until it is melted, add 8-10% scent. Stick your wick in a container and push a wick pin through to hold the top in place and pour.

I made tons for a school fete a few years ago and I costed them at £2 each incl everything, tin with lid, safety label, but they were only small, not the standard jar size. So I reckon a standard jar (if you have got to buy a jar) would be about £3.50 to make.

has anyone had partylite candles? I've heard they are soya but do they smell nice?

OP posts:
Antiquevintageandrusty · 15/01/2019 18:50

No, I haven't heard of them but have just googled them, look fake, coloured, produced on an industrial scale and have 'consultants'.

Not remotely the sort of thing I would go for (and I can't see them stating soy wax anywhere).

MyGuideJools · 15/01/2019 18:54

Oh dear, I don't want a candle partyGrin
I've googled the Woodbridge ones and they look good. I may try one of those. The orange blossom sounds nice.

Make your own with soy wax and add your favourite scent.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/01/2019 18:57

Please don't buy into all the marketing hype about soy wax because that's all it is...hype.
Vast swathes of rainforest are now being destroyed to make way for the planting of it. It's all gm and grown using pesticides and herbicides which destroys the ecology of the area its grown in. Only 3% of the soy grown in America is certified sustainable. None of it is certified organic. All the soy wax used in the UK for candle making is from America.
Paraffin ( mineral wax) is a byproduct of oil refining. Its perfect for candles and gives a much better scent throw than soy. It's a material that is food safe, widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry and proven to be a good safe wax to use for candles as long as it has the correct wick.
All this talk about soy wax being better than paraffin wax is all a marketing strategy brought about by American Agriculture moguls and the chemical companies who provide the gm seed.
The same with using essential oils in candles. Many are not safe to be used around pet, pregnant women and those with certain health conditions. Also, the minute you set light to them, they lose any therapeutic properties they may have had. There are perfectly good fragrance oils developed and tested specifically for candles which an experienced Chandler would use.
If you want a good quality candle at a reasonable price, look for small independent chandlers rather than some of the big companies who import from china

MyGuideJools · 15/01/2019 19:21

oooh sugarplum I had no idea! Definitely food for thought!
The 'compass' candles are a small independent company but use soyaConfused

@MyGuideJools
You have no idea how annoyed I get about the candles companies who claim that soy is eco friendly and sustainable.
A few years ago, a paper was published in USA about some studies that had been done comparing soy wax to paraffin wax in candles. Of course it said that soy was clean burning, no toxins etc...turns out that it was financed by the big agricultural companies. A new study was carried out in Finland, a totally unbiased study this time that debunked the whole report.

Thanks sugarplum that's very interesting.

OP posts:
MyGuideJools · 21/01/2019 22:29

I've ordered a Woodbridge lime and mango and a Parks vanilla. I will report back.
incidentally the Parks candles had some good discounts. One will be for a friend's birthday, not sure which one yet!

OP posts:
MyGuideJools · 29/01/2019 07:49

The candles have arrived. The lime and mango smells nice and fresh.
Not so sure about the parks vanilla. It smells very sweet, not like my usual vanilla scent. smells more like honey🤔

Yellowbutterfly1 · 29/01/2019 08:23

Have you tried bees wax candles? Not sure if they would be better then soy.

MyGuideJools · 03/02/2019 15:19

Aldi's Jo Malone dupe candles are really good. Also, John Lewis stock a huge range. Some are a bit ££££ but worth a look if you want to treat yourself, they stock True Grace - one of my favourites.
