Someone was in my garden last night. Now I can't sleep

I'm feeling very scared and vulnerable at the moment as last night someone was in my back garden. We recently had our shed broken into and things stollen. Why are they targeting me?

Can anyone advise what I can do to help prevent this happening again?

I’m sorry you’re feeling that way, I’d be feeling really vulnerable and pretty sleepless in the same situation. I’m certainly no security expert but you might want to look at getting some security lighting - you know the ones that come on when movement is detected. I had one in my back yard, which has been used as an escape route for local ne’er-do-wells and it made me feel a bit safer, however it was also activated by the local cats who occasionally dropped by.

And forgot to say hope you manage to feel calm and get some sleep tonight. Get stuck into a good book for some distraction and hopefully you’ll have a restful night.

If it helps, you can get cheap nighttime security cameras on amazon for £40 ish and security lights for £20. My mum has bought the former and uses it for security and I bought one of the latter so I could see my black dog in the garden at night! Might help you feel more secure xx

There are several things you can do to be more secure:

  • security lights
  • if you have a fence they are climbing over move garden furniture, bins etc away from the fence so they can't use these to help climb. Consider planting Holly or a rose bushes (something prickly) where they might get access.
  • Get a strong shed padlock.
  • Get a shed and house alarm
  • put up security cameras (or dummy cameras even if proper cctv is tricky - dummy cameras are about £5.)
I hope that helps.
