Foot tendon pain. Is this a really bad idea?

I have Ehlers Danlos hypermobility type and if I increase activity it often causes tendinitis. I went for a long walk (for me) after a period of being pretty inactive and all along the little toe side of my foot aches. I’ve rested it for 2 days and am taking ibuprofen but as this foot is the one I keep injuring the most I’m tempted to buy a aircast waking boot and rest it for 6 weeks to try let it heal. The one time I did go to minor injuries was before I was diagnosed with EDS and I was told I’d torn a tendon in the same foot. It wasn’t xrayed and it took years to heal. I wonder if it had been imobilised at the time whether I’d not be having problems with it. I can’t go to minor injuries as it wasn’t an injury just over use and I’m not in agony like I was years ago. Is it safe to just buy a boot and rest it or should I go to the GP?

Do you have decent orthotic insoles?

Ruth2009 · 14/01/2019 23:35

Do you see an orthotist or podiatrist for your EDS?
It sounds like you need some support or things like this will continue to happen in the future.
If you don't see an NHS one, could you afford to pay privately?

Thanks. No I don’t have any custom made insoles at present. the ones I’ve had made in the past have made my foot hurt more so I gave up. I haven’t seen anyone since diagnosis two years ago but I’m having more problems now so I think you’re right in that I need a referral. I got the diagnosis at the royal orthopaedic hospital in Stanmore which is where DD goes but I live at the other end of the country so it’s not practical to go there for something like this but I’ll go to my GP about this latest foot thing. As I’m getting older I am getting more sprains and strains so buying a cam boot is in hindsight rather plonking a sticking plaster on the situation I guess.

I agree, you need a referral, as this problem isn't going to go away on its own. I think you should see your gp for this as you shouldn't have to be buying aircast boots yourself.
Long term, what kind of shoes do you wear? In general, a laced ankle boot like a piedro boot would support your ankle more and allow you to adjust them to suit you.

That could be a really bad idea. I had plantir fasiitis (sp?) and it turned out I was doing more harm by avoiding pressure on it. You need to at least see the GP.

Don’t immobise your foot without proper medical
advice! you run the risk of forming blood clots and possibly a stroke.

Mousewithascarf · 15/01/2019 14:32

Thanks everyone. I’ve phoned and made a GP appointment. I never even thought about the risk of blood clot\stroke. For the last 3 years I’ve worn trainers because everything else makes my foot hurt. I can’t find either boots or sandals in summer that don’t aggravate some area or other.

I’ve not heard of Piedro BootsRuth. I’ll go google those right now.

Any person in below keen immobilisation (plaster cast or walking boot) needs risk assessing for blood clot formation & may need preventative medication. Not a good idea to do this yourself

Mousewithascarf · 15/01/2019 15:08

Right, I’ve put all ideas of self treating (other than with painkillers and rest) out the window. Thank you. I certainly don’t want to end up with a whole different and potentially a lot worse problems that I’d not even considered.
