Insurance for new driver....

....is there any way of it not costing a million pounds? When ds passes his test our insurance will go up from £400ish to £2600ish. And that’s with a black box. Is that what all of you pay or am I missing something?

It is very expensive when first passing test and it will gradually reduce. When I first passsedI was 17 and it was around £1200, I was a name driver but the car was mine. The following year it was around £1000 but as the policy holder. I no longer have the same car but I know it would be around £300 so it does reduce. Once 25 it reduces further.

How old is your son when he’s going to pass? What car is it that he will be insured on? I only say as it maybe worth him getting a small car with low insurance group, than pay all of that just for insurance.

Fluffyears · 14/01/2019 19:38

The car the new driver is driving doesn’t matter. Insurance is high in case you have an accident and maybe writeoff someone’s new Lexus for example. The more people in the policy the better.,taking passplus etc all help.

We've been quoted about £1500 for our 17 year old son. I think it's because insurance for our area is generally much lower than average.

FVFrog · 14/01/2019 19:42

Yes you take a hit the first year when they have passed their test but that does seem excessive, whereabouts do you live? Admiral multi car was @1500 for the first year post test with a black box, but after 10 months they gave you a full Years worth of no claims bonus and it dropped to about £700 for us.

Fluffyears · 14/01/2019 19:42

My workmate was quoted £1200 and thevcar she was giving her son was only worth £800ish.

bbcessex · 14/01/2019 19:47

Fluffy - the high premium is usually based on the statistical evidence of damage young & inexperienced drivers can do you can do to others (property & people) so the value of your car doesn’t really matter (the size of the engine does though).

FVFrog · 14/01/2019 19:50

Also you are basically self insuring your own car as the excess will likely be more than the car is worth if typical cheap car runaround. You are paying to cover as PP said, writing off someone else’s car.

guessmyusername · 14/01/2019 20:23

Try direct line black box insurance they were very reasonable for dd with her father on the policy as a named driver

BF888 · 14/01/2019 20:23

The lower the insurance group on the car the cheaper it is. A Peugeot 107, Citroen c1 etc is much cheaper than a Audi a1. All small cars but can have big difference in price.

BertrandRussell · 14/01/2019 20:49

I was surprised at the massive jump-we have loads of no claims bonus and our insurance is really really cheap. But it’s quite a big car-a Subaru Forrester. It might be better to get a small cheap car for him instead. Or just hope he fails his test!

Haha 😆 it maybe a case of one of those three wheel cars people would push over Hmm

I think it being a Subaru will probably have an impact, especially being first time driver. Maybe try doing some test quotes on some smaller cheaper cars and see if it makes a difference.

SwagQueen · 14/01/2019 23:39

Cost me £1900 and that was a good deal...

BertrandRussell · 15/01/2019 12:37

Would it be cheaper if he had his own car and was the only driver?

WhentheDealGoesDown · 15/01/2019 12:44

Best to get his own small car and be the main driver with you as a named driver. An experienced named driver will bring it down

Justaboutawake · 15/01/2019 12:45

Go to the Martin Lewis website. They list the best cars to buy to get cheapest insurance based on age groups. For me I was being quoted in the £000’s but went on there and it said to look at Peugeot 108, Citroen c1 etc for my age bracket and the insurance was way cheaper so I now have a lovely little 1 litre Peugeot. Was much cheaper to buy a car and insure for a year than it was to be added to my partners insurance.

BF888 · 15/01/2019 16:34

Agree with whenthedealgoesdown.

For me with my first car it taught me a lot even down to money management to make sure I could look after it, fuel it and maintenance. Even though an investment he will get so much more from it.

MadisonAvenue · 15/01/2019 16:39

We paid £1250 with Admiral for black box insurance for our 18 year old a few months ago, he drives a Fiat Punto which we found was one of the cheaper cars to insure for his age group when he was looking at what to buy.

Abra1de · 15/01/2019 16:42

I would buy a smaller car.

Ours were between £850 and £1000 when they passed their tests in a Corsa. The older Corsas are great cars, go on for ages.

Abra1de · 15/01/2019 16:43

And yes, you and DP as named drivers too will bring the cost down.

Bell/Admiral are good.
