What the hell is a fact family and do you usually learn them in p1?

DD is in p1 and until tonight her maths homework has been simple sums up to 20.

Tonight she has to do a maths game online and one of the questions is what is the same fact family as XX and a variety of options. Wtf? Dd is 5 and says she’s never heard of fact family’s. None of the games have suggested age ranges but she was given a log in code so I they should all be suitable for her age range but I honestly think she’s been given the wrong age range.

There were also questions about odd and even numbers and tens and units. Surely this is beyond your average p1?

Fact families

I thought P1 was equivalent of reception - this seems a bit much?!

All of this is pretty standard for England Y1 so ages 5-6. A fact family is for example:
If 7+3 =10
Then I know that 3+7=10, 10-3=7 and 10-7=3. As your child moves up the school this will progress to multiplication and division fact families two. It's just a way of getting kids used to the idea of the relationship between numbers and inverse operations.

Some examples for year 1 here

But P1 is Scotland and is first year of school so is reception equivalent. 4-5 not 5-6. Well more like 4.5-5.5 but still.

That link helps, thanks.

Glad it’s not just me that thinks it’s a bit much. At her parents evening they said the maths curriculum for P1 was numbers to 10 so this is definitely a stretch.

Number bonds?

MotherOfSuburbia · 14/01/2019 19:51

I was teaching this in Year 2 today with a view to solving missing number problems. I know they touched on it in Year 1 but Rec seems a bit much!

P1 maths should be a whole lot more than numbers to 10!
