Finding it hard to get into employment post SAHM

I've been at home for the last 10 years with my 3 Dses, one of whom has ASC & needed additional care particularly at preschool age. I loved doing it & DH & I agreed it was right for our family & we were fine financially too (I was very frugal which helped).

Now DS3 has started school (In September) & I've been looking to get back into work. I had an interview in November & was offered the job the following week Smile It's with local authority so there are certain procedures to follow, but it's taking a lot longer than I expected! First of all they wanted 2 work & 1 character reference, which I wasn't able to supply as the employer I had before maternity leave now no longer exist. I did have 1 reference from volunteering, which they accepted. I also gave my father's business partner as a reference & am not sure whether this will be accepted - I've known him for about 30 years & worked on & off for the firm (solicitors) so he can vouch for me on a professional & personal basis. The HR firm has also been asking for details of my secondary school education, which surprised me, I'm 41 now so not a school leaver!

In retrospect, I am glad I've done the volunteering I have & wish I'd done another role too, as it would have left me in a better position wrt references etc. I am also struggling to see how the system accommodates people who have been working in small family firms or on their own, as have lots of mums I know e.g. a couple who do accounts for their DHs etc.

I am very much hoping it all works out for me as I'm excited to get back to work plus it is a job I very much enjoy (it is basically a paid version of my volunteering role iyswim).

No advice sorry but following as in exactly the same position!

I had the exact same, with the added issue I'd worked for myself, this was despite previously having a very high powered career pre-kids in a large multi-national. All the old directors I'd worked with 20 years ago are long gone either dead, retired or doing something else and not traceable even on Linked In so not much hope of a reference. Even people I've been the boss of I have lost touch with as they have moved, remarried and changed names or gone emigrated.

I ended up having to use the deputy head of my kids' primary school as a reference, as I'd volunteered there as a parent helper. I was also still in touch with my old boss.

It's so frustrating, isn't it? I'm thrilled that I've been offered a job, but worried that it may come to nothing after all. If it does I will take on some extra volunteering, so I have referees- maybe hearing DC read at school or volunteering in the charity shop (All things I couldn't do with DC at home). I will also tell other SAHM friends of mine so they can think about it if they want to start work at any point!

Gallicos my old boss is dead & the company disbanded so that won't work! The HT at school does know me well but I've not helped out so I don't know if that's possible either. Argh!

I recently went thought this (for NHS admin post). One of my references ended up having to be from ‘a person of standing in the community’. It was fine, a friend who is a solicitor completed the required form. But like you I was a bit worried! I am sure you will be fine, organisations have processes to cover this sort of issue.
