Filter lanes...

Why don't people use them? There's been £millions spent locally to out in an extra lane between two roundabouts a mile or so apart which experience heavy traffic. The idea being I suppose to stop traffic tailing back onto the roundabouts themselves and causing further tailbacks developing. The extra lane filters back in as you approach the roundabout. Why don't people use them...many people sit in the mile omg queue whilst the other lane is empty...? And why do some motorists insist on aggressively blocking those trying to filter back in (I presume they see it as 'queue jumping'?). Seen it not only there but in many other situations too where a filter lane has been added to try to ease traffic issues and prevent them backsplling onto crossroads/roundabouts etc. I just don't get it Confused

Why don't people use them? Because some motorists insist on aggressively blocking those trying to filter back in. You said it yourself.

SuziQ10 · 14/01/2019 16:20

Because it effectively is queue jumping

DGRossetti · 14/01/2019 16:37

Is it queue jumping when the signs explicitly instruct motorists to use all lanes until merge ?

Because you get twats who don't realise the benefits of merging like a zip.

Lifeofsmiley · 14/01/2019 17:09

Some people don’t understand lane discipline, much like the people who sit in the middle lane for no reason.

ShowOfHands · 14/01/2019 17:12

It isn't queue jumping at all but many aggressive people don't understand this and sit there contributing to a problem while hampering its solution.

GiantKitten · 14/01/2019 17:26

The way the zippering thing speeds up traffic hasn’t been explained loudly or clearly enough in this country. Once it is I think most people would be happy to use it as intended. Not sure what the solution is though Confused

Well it's clearly not a sign telling drivers to do it.

I guess there's a mechanical solution involving alternating rubber mallets. Which quite frankly could be used on cars or heads ....

GiantKitten · 14/01/2019 17:30

We need signs like this everywhere it’s supposed to happen Smile
& public education films & stuff.

Filter lanes...

Although when there are dickheads like GeaVox in the comments at the end of this RAC article, there’s not much hope for the rest of us Hmm

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/01/2019 18:01

Most people are too stupid to understand filter lanes and like to sit in a queue and then sound their horn and give you the evils if you try and pull in like you’re supposed to.

Ffsnosexallowed · 14/01/2019 18:04

I was today old when I finally figured out what "merge in turn" means. Thank you!

FadedRed · 14/01/2019 18:06

There should be greater use of “merge in turn” signing. Rarely seen these days, but it does work better when the signs are in place.

KatnissMellark · 15/01/2019 08:10

Because it effectively is queue jumping

Only if you don't understand the system.

Had a lovely drive back from swimming this morning. I go up a steep hill that's 2 lanes until merging at the very top after 300 yards. There's a sign at the foot saying to USE BOTH LANES UNTIL MERGE.

And everyone was doing it !!!!! And merging in turn. It was like ballet.

FlipF · 15/01/2019 13:30

I know people love to moan about drivers in the UK but you don't realise how polite drivers are here until you have lived abroad. 😕
There are plenty of tossers here but the majority of people are ok.

ShivD · 15/01/2019 13:36

This gets me so much. Same as on the motorway when a lane is being closed and they warn you in distances bad peoples queue in the open lane leaving 1/2 mile left of the lane that is about to close. I love whizzing up it and zipping in like I’m supposed to Halo

When the zip does work it’s like poetry in motion.

NannyR · 15/01/2019 13:46

I get this on a roundabout I use to get to work every day. To go straight ahead there are two lanes, then after you come off the roundabout the two lanes merge, with a merge in turn sign at the side of the road. I would say that 75% of drivers will queue up in the left lane, and then make it really difficult for the drivers who choose to use the right-hand lane to then merge back in. The extra lanes have been put there for a reason, if equal numbers of drivers used both lanes and zip merged, the traffic would run so much more smoothly and efficiently.

DGRossetti · 15/01/2019 13:59

It's ironic that generally, a lot of traffic measures are intended to slow down and disincentivise motoring. But something which does speed up traffic and makes it more efficient (more cars/sq. m/hour) and most motorists prevent it working.
