New portion size guidance - what do you think?

www.theguardian.com/science/2019/jan/14/nutritionists-launch-portion-size-guide-to-tackle-overeating

This is roughly in line with the portion sizes I've been eating recently in a drive to be healthier - BUT I have been often pretty hungry (not starving, just used to a greater amount of food and having to reset my norms) and it's very very hard to eat out at all and follow these guidelines. I know reading threads on here, for example, many people think 500g of mince will only serve two people in bolognese.

Well for one thing, women these days, especially younger women are taller and heavier than your average 1950s housewife, so simply existing burns more calories.
Heavier maybe
but average height has not changed since the 50's

BiscuitDrama · 16/01/2019 18:22

I think average height is rising?

THat is for men ....

Teateaandmoretea · 16/01/2019 18:47

Average height is definitely more than the 50s

EggysMom · 16/01/2019 18:52

My thought around the portion sizes being judged by hand sizes was .... that must mean Donald Trump is losing weight.

feelingverylazytoday · 16/01/2019 19:20

The average height of British women has increased since the 1950s, according to this www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/womens-body-changes-since-1957-self-image-fashion-weight-health-sizes-positive-a7633036.html
It would be surprising if it hadn't. Personally I think it's noticeable just through observation.

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/01/2019 21:02

When I was a young woman (say 18 to 25), it was quite unusual to come across a woman taller than me, and it was something I really noticed if I did.

Now I feel like much more average height, with a significant proportion of other women taller than me, and some that seem to tower over me.

Seline · 16/01/2019 21:04

Barbara I'm 5"6 and feel very average height too.

mirialis · 17/01/2019 08:57

Blimey - that article says average UK bra size is now 36DD.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/01/2019 09:09

Well that's the the bit of the article that stands out as complete nonsense.

There's no way, Kim Kardashian is a 36DD, she's much slimmer round the ribcage for a start, probably a 28 or 30 back size at most.

mirialis · 17/01/2019 10:02

I didn't think about the KK bit - gawd knows what her actual dimensions are given the amount of surgery.

But I'm surprised that 36DD is the average UK women's bra size these days, but then I suppose with an average 34 inch waist it makes sense.

feelingverylazytoday · 17/01/2019 11:19

Barbara they're probably using the old way of bra sizing where you add 4 or 5 inches to the chest measurement. A lot of British shops still do this (all the ones I use do).
Saw this great bit of film from 1976 where it's easy to see that the majority of women have small natural breasts (especially as the photographer is a perve who focusses on them).

QuimReaper · 17/01/2019 12:37

feeling That video is fascinating, but you're right, what a pervy clip! He closes in on every single woman's breasts and several bums too!

mirialis · 17/01/2019 19:04

Bloody hell what is that video??! So creepy!

You are right though, women do look different with natural small boobs and non padded bras.

mirialis · 17/01/2019 19:08

When I say 'small', I mean 'normal' (i.e. my size) Wink At 34 B-C I'm feeling positively flat-chested in comparison to that average 36DD The only thing that makes me 2017 woman is being 165cm (5ft 5 I think) and realising I've always felt I'm on the shorter side of average.
