Christening... absent father.

So, my 4.5 month old's dad is absent, hasn't met her nor acknowledged her birth. He isn't on the birth certificate.

I would like to get her christened and wandered if an absent parent would be an issue?

@GoldenEvilHoor I am yes, haven't been long though.

Really? I know it's frowned upon to have a child out of wedlock but churches seem to pride themselves on accepting people from all walks.. so I would say it's not very 'church like'.

My church would not baptise the child of unmarried parents - I think that attitude is fairly rare now. certainly my church wouldn't have an issue, nor would many others. most churches will not withhold baptism if asked, but may aak you to attended a few sessions to ensure you understand what the ceremony means.

If he isn't on the birth certificate you can go ahead. If he is on the birth certificate then his permission is needed for the baby/child to be baptised.

It is very rare in the C of E for a vicar to insist that parents are married. Of the last few baptisms I've done around 50% were married. The others were single parents or living together.

@mostlydrinkstea Thank you for the info.

He isn't on the birth certificate. This type of thing makes me glad he's not! He chose to not be part of her life so I'd be seething to have ask his permission for anything!

Wow. Our vicar baptised his own grand daughter, born to his 17 yr old daughter out of wedlock, on a busy Sunday with pride!
