BRISTOL - where to eat and places to visit - overnight stay for Uni interview

We're staying centrally but would like to know about interesting areas with independent shops and restaurants within easy reach that you'd recommend.

Budget = tight!

Thank you Smile

(PS - tried posting on MN local but it wouldn't recognise Bristol as a location on my draft post Confused )

Which uni?

Park Street has loads of odd shops - the odd higher end clothes chains next to a big art supplies shop next to a second hand clothes shop opposite the design guild shop.

St Nicks has wonderful food stalls. Actual market is not great though.

I don't know the outer bits well (I work in the centre and live 20 miles out) but my youthful colleagues like Gloucester Road to eat/pub.

This is from the university's website. Bristol is a fabulous, vibrant city. I love it. The area around the uni has lots of nice cafes. bars and shops.

I meant the University of Bristol. UWE is a bit further out near to where I'll be working shortly.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 13/01/2019 20:37

UWE, but we're staying in the city centre the night before the interview.

Thank you, I'll have a Google of those areas

Wapping Wharf is good for independent places to eat and close to the centre, well worth a look

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 20:48

Is it normal for parents to accompany students to open days and interviews these days?

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 13/01/2019 20:53

Hen I'm not accompanying her to the interview, just providing transport there and back.

The interview is first thing in the morning and, having been warned about Bristol rush hour traffic and not trusting public transport, I thought we'd go the night before and go on a jolly get a feel for the city.

St Nicholas is great for food during the day but generally closed in the evening. Agree that Whapping Wharf and Gloucester Road/Cheltenham Road are good bets for shops and restaurants, also there are a few nice places to eat in the Queen’s square area (King street, Clare street, Baldwin street), although more mixed in with chains.

I went to UWE (Bristol poly as it was then) and I’m still in Bristol over 30 years later! Bristol is a fab place and I always lived around Gloucester Road when I was a student and still do now, although it has gentrified a lot in the meantime. Wrapping ward would be a great place to eat too and you could combine that with a visit to the SS Great Britain and/the M shed. Which site would your DD be based at?

Some of my favourite restaurants:

Yakinori on Park Street
Bambalan on the waterfront
Caribbean Croft in Stokes Croft
Pie Minister also in Stokes Croft

None of them very pricey.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 13/01/2019 21:01

ooh Wapping Wharf looks interesting!
