Foodie trip around Britain?

FurryDogMother · 13/01/2019 16:43

This is not a TAAT, but it's inspired by another thread about the quality of restaurant food in Britain.

In the next couple of years (waiting on a change of circumstances), my DH and I are planning to buy an RV and go touring around the UK and Ireland for a couple of months, whilst renovations are happening to our home. We've got some planned places to go to see friends, but we'd also like to make it a proper foodie trip - visiting restaurants, producers, food outlets etc. So...

I'd really like to get recommendations for outstanding foodie places in your area - anywhere in Great Britain, really. A lot of the fun in planning this trip is researching the places to visit and creating an itinerary. We'd be self-catering most of the time but hope to have 2 or 3 wonderful food experiences per week. Budget has limits and we're more interested in locally sourced ingredients and regional dishes than a Manoir or Fat Duck experience, and we're not planning on much time, if any, in London (have worked there in the past, it's not very scenic!).

I've always wanted to write a book - and we're keen photographers, too - so something may come of that - but it's not the main focus. I'd just love to hear from others who have recommendations, or ideas that'd make this a wonderful experience :) Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

Fish and chips in Yorkshire are by far the best in the country.

If you make it to the Isle of Man, you must have queenies (small scallops). Most pubs do them, and I like them with chips and salad as a meal.

The pork pie shop in Skipton. Simply cannot be beaten, and I'm not even a Yorkshireman.

If you get a pork pie in Yorkshire, get it hot with mushy peas and mint sauce - apparently much of the country don't eat it like this, but it's a common way here, especially as the standard bonfire night supper.

If you’re heading towards Yorkshire I’d go to the Courtyard Dairy (cheese shop loads of local and European cheeses, smells heavenly and they’re real enthusiasts) which is on the A65 west of Skipton. Also check out Lishman’s butchers in Ilkley. The bacon and sausages are fantastic.

In the Sheffield area, you want a hot pork sandwich. Roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce, crackling and the bread dipped in the meat juices.

Bury market - cheap, cheerful, local, high-quality produce. Could be combined with a trip to Nutters in Rochdale or a fancy night out in Manchester.

You could go to the asparagus auction at the Fleece Inn, Bretforton. Then pop to Hereford and buy some Hereford Hop cheese. Cider from local producers. Then Ludlow because - it’s Ludlow!

Then East Midlands for oatcakes, baltis on balti mile in Brum, Leics for Stilton and pork pies.

Drum & Monkey in Harrogate for incredible fish

WingsofNylon · 13/01/2019 19:36

I don't know if it has been mentioned but don't forget to visit some of the cider orchards of Somerset!

The Smokehouse in Torridon. Fantastic smoked salmon and other fish.
Cranston's in Penrith for their Cumberland sausage
The Old Hall in Whitehough, Chinley for an amazing selection of beers
Grains in Glossop for bread

I’d second The Three Chimneys on Skye and The Hidden Hut in Cornwall. Would add Riverford Field Kitchen in Devon to the list for a fabulous tasting menu based around the organic vegetables they grow on their farms. Not only is the food delicious but it’s a really sociable experience - one sitting with everyone seated on benches so you’ll meet some new people too.

TherightsideofHERstory · 13/01/2019 19:53

Just thought of another, La Fibule, Moroccan in Birmingham, combine with a trip to markets in Brum for Jamaican/Caribbean food.

Xiaoxiong · 13/01/2019 19:53

Yorkshire I was given the Hidden Hut cookbook for Christmas and it is fantastic - have made 6 things from it so far and every one has been a winner. Can't recommend it enough.

Come for a curry in Brum.

Oldieandgoldie · 13/01/2019 22:57

East Yorkshire, Pipe & Glass, followed by Beverley food festival the next day. And the Fish Shed? Near Southwold?

bookishtartlet · 14/01/2019 00:11

Edinburgh, Fife and Angus; all east coast Scotland, all have outstanding locally sourced restaurants. Lots of places to visit and pitch up the RV.

BeachtheButler · 14/01/2019 00:13

I second Ludlow and the Isle of Wight garlic farm. Galloway is good for smoked fish and meats.

magicroundabouts · 14/01/2019 02:06

Cork and in particular West Cork has a huge food scene.
Cork city has the famous English Market and also look at Skibereen, Bantry and Midleton and Kinsale markets.
Lots of local producers doing amazing things. Big food festivals in September

^^This. Farmgate in Midleton and Ballymaloe are amazing.

Wow, so many wonderful suggestions - am going to print this thread off and spend a happy hour or several (well, maybe a week!) planning a route. I'm beginning to think this should be a walking tour rather than a driving one, in order to work off the calories! Thanks so much, all :)

Fish and chips in the Applecross Inn - best I’ve tasted with the most amazing views. Three chimneys in Skye for lunch . Also in Skye is a great family run restaurant in a little village called Stein www.lochbay-restaurant.co.uk/about/.
The baking at the community centre in uig in Lewis is fantastic and you can get scallops or lobster straight from the sea at the local harbour for a bbq on the beach agoo.gl/images/5Q6vCh
