Help, norovirus freaking out

widgetbeana · 13/01/2019 16:42

Norovirus is doin the rounds of my DD school.(read taking out half the school)
I am freaking out, we have elderly family come to visit for the week and neither of my dds have ever had a stomach bug. So if they come down with it they are likely to freak out a bit.

My DH has this week off work and we are meant to be going away for a couple of nights midweek (hence family members coming to look after dds)

I am freaking out we will get ill and it will be a nightmare. Please give me hope or tips or a slap to stop me freaking out!

Well, you could get it but equally you might not. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do to stop it happening, although stringent handwashing with warm water and soap and drying them properly helps. You could disinfect the bathroom and eating areas. Sparser from that, just keep your fingers crossed! Try not to get too wound up about it, there’s not anything you can do if they do get it.

Sanitizer. Practice good hygiene, wash hands more regularly, don't touch your face or mouth at all. Just be extra cautious!

I worked on cruise ships for 4 years where this would regularly do the rounds and I managed to avoid it every time. It can be done!

I am emetephobic so totally get how you feel. I read somewhere once that some people are less susceptible to stomach bugs, so perhaps your dds are and this is why they haven't been sick yet. Unless they are twins, to get through at least one full year without a tummy bug in primary is pretty good going.

More practically ensure they wash their hands when they come in from school (I do this every time I come in) and prompt them to wash their hands at school too. Ensure you have plenty of products to clean up if the worse comes to the worst. I always found having a strategy in place to deal with bugs made me feel more prepared.

Good luck and fingers crossed

Freaking out isn’t going to make the DC any more or less likely to get it, so what’s the point? If it happens you’ll deal with it, if it doesn’t then fab.

Don’t rely on hand gel unless it specifically states it is antiviral as well as antibacterial. Norovirus - the clue is in the name. Standard hand sanitizers are not effective. Frequent hand washing with soap and warm water, bleach on ‘frequently touched’ places, clean, dry towels etc will minimise the risk, but nothing you can do is 100% (unless you move to an isolated place and have no contact with any other person Grin).

Thank you for the support. I know freaking out won't help, but I keep spiralling I my thoughts. I have emotional issues about vomiting, my DM had cancer when I was a child and anytime vomitted it was a sign she was getting sicker again. I am aware it is futile and not going to help. I just can't help it.

I am hopeful we will be ok, my dd1 has never thrown up except for the adnenoid surgery, dd2 has only grown up twice, (car sickness). So I'm hoping they are hardy!
