Help me find a solid shampoo/conditioner (Lush)

I am trying to do my bit to reduce plastic, and am trying to convert to solid shampoo/conditioners.

I have found a few solid shampoos at Lush which seem OK, but I have had no joy at all with conditioners. I went in recently and bought their Avocado Co-wash (shampoo and conditioner in one), hoping it would be the holy grail.

The assistant assured me it wouldn't leave my (very fine) hair greasy, but a) it doesn't lather at all (not necessarily a problem) but b) it leaves my hair looking and feeling unwashed. It does smell amazing.

I am sure Lush have an excellent customer service policy and I'm sure I can return it (I hope so at £11.50 for a bar!), but it's a 30 minute journey, and I want to be sure I'm exchanging it for something that actually works.

Any recommendations for a shampoo and/or solid conditioner for very fine, limp hair?

I don't use Lush, but I do use a shampoo bar, and surprisingly I don't need a separate conditioner. My hair is long, dry and tangly so I really thought I would!

I use a Coconut and Lime one as I thought the coconut would help. There are others in the range for different hair types.

I stock them in my shop and they are not a mainstream brand - but just saying, Lush isn't the only place to look :)

I use Lush solid shampoo but can't find a solid conditioner that works at all. I tried again and bought a Lush one recently. Smells beautiful but is impossible to actually get it to coat your hair. You rub it on and it just tangles your hair and gets a little bit of stuff on some of the top layer of your hair. Rubbish. Watching thread with interest.

Another one watching with interest.

I use the Lush honey shampoo bar but haven't risked the conditioner as yet. My hair is fly away and gets tangled if you just look at it, so it's something I do need to use.
The conditioner reviews seem a bit hit and miss. At present I just satisfy myself that I'm reducing the household plastic as best I can.

I’ve been using the Lush lemon shampoo bar for a few weeks and I really like it, it’s very clarifying and smells gorgeous. It’s my first foray into the solid shampoo.

I don’t like any of Lush’s conditioners though Sad

I wonder if you might have more luck finding one in a glass bottle rather than in solid form or some places do refills of stuff like washing up liquid and detergent so maybe will do refills of some toiletries too

Knittink · 13/01/2019 13:20

I was thinking just this morning how great it would be if there were a local toiletries shop that did refillable bottles of stuff. I guess maybe this exists in trendy hipster type areas, but I'm in Cumbria. Grin

Try

six foot and clean

Nice products, considerably cheaper than Lush

Knittink · 13/01/2019 13:57

Wow - have just found out there's a zero waste shop 15 mins from me which does have shampoo bars and also refillable shampoo, conditioner, foods, household products and all sorts!

CluelessMillenial · 13/01/2019 15:24

I use lush honey shampoo bar and the conditioner bar from there that smells like Parma violets. Its the only conditioner bar that doesn't dry my hair out. But to get it onto all the hair I have to really scrunch my hair to and let it sit for a few minutes. I also use their hair custard before drying. Interested to hear other brands as I want something cheaper! Especially away from lush and their political campaigns.

I use conditioner flakes:

Shouldn't have clicked on the thread...

Now I have bought a shampoo bar and a soap bar... How does everyone store them in the shower?

AdobeWanKenobi · 13/01/2019 16:27

Just a heads up. If you dye your hair the lush bars will strip the colour quickly. Shame as there is one called 'new' that smelled divine.

Haypanky · 13/01/2019 16:30

I'm struggling with lush conditioner bars too. The other day I washed, conditioned, it felt worse after conditioner so I shampooed it out! Could actually get a brush through fine which was surprising. Might skip it totally next time and just see but worried it won't be manageable as my hair gets longer. It's bicep length at the mo.

JennyHolzersGhost · 13/01/2019 16:32

Lush do refills, I think, which is preferable to buying new plastic if you really don’t get on with the solid bars.
With the bars, I think it works better to work them in your hands to get a decent coating and then use your hands to work through your hair. You will probably need to do this a few times, depending how long your hair is.

Antiquevintageandrusty · 13/01/2019 16:35

My hairdresser uses/sells Davines products - they refill everything, shampoo, conditioner etc., etc.. You just take your empty bottle/container back in.

Loccitane also sell refills for a lot of their products.

Uncooperativefingers · 13/01/2019 16:43

Have you checked Friendly Soap? They do solid shampoo and were working on a conditioner, don't know if they're selling one yet.

A much more ethical company than Lush too!

I use the Lush honey solid shampoo and the violet conditioner. I have dyed hair and was told they would stop my hair looking brassy. They haven’t stripped my hair of colour( which I only get done 3 times a year) at all. Hairdresser has commented on how well it’s lasting. I pay a lot to have mine coloured to blend in with the natural colour and grow out naturally. She does an amazing job and knows her stuff.

So I’m v pleased with my Lush products. Only thing I woukd say is that the violet conditioner takes some getting used to. It is more natural and gives a finish which I prefer. I have very think hair which can dry and go frizzy. It doesn’t tangle the hair but you knnxbof have to run it on. You think it’s not going on but it is. It just doesn’t lathed up. Conditioned bar has lasted just as long as the shampoo.

I’d never revert to bottles. Just wish they’d do a solid shower gel that lasts as long. The one I tried made a mess and barely lasted a week, cost a fortune.

Use soap Nordic Star !

HoldtheFrontPage · 13/01/2019 21:00

So it seems as though most people have the same problem finding a solid conditioner that works for them.

Out of interest, why do solid bars strip colour from hair when liquid shampoos don't?
