Toothache! Can someone help please!

I’ve had tooth/jaw pain since Tuesday in my lower jaw on the right side towards the back. It felt like a sore throat at the same time with a soreness in the front of my neck but that has gone.

I was hoping it was getting better but I’ve woken up and it’s v sore again

I went to the dentist on Friday who took an x-ray and said there was nothing wrong just an inflamed gum and sent me on my way with the instruction to buy corsodyl mouthwash.

The problem is, it doesn’t feel like my gum, it’s an ache in my tooth and jaw. I’m not saying the dentist was wrong (let’s be honest, I’ve no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to teeth!) but the check up was v rushed (in and out in 6 minutes) and I’m worried something was missed.

Our dentist doesn’t run an appointment service for check ups, you just turn up and wait so if I need to go back then I’ll need to take the morning off work rather then book a small slot that works, which isn’t doable this week

Can any knowledgeable people tell me if an inflamed gum would cause this pain? Should I see the dentist or wait it out?!

TIA

Change your dentist?
How old are you? It could be a wisdom tooth. Be careful using corsodyl for too long as it stains teeth.
Very odd not to run an appointment system for check ups too. Are you in the uk? If everybody just turned up when they fancied there must be chaos. I really can't imagine how this would work.
Yes, an inflamed gum can be very painful. But why is it inflamed? Is there a bit of food caught below the gum line? Using hot slightly salted water, hold it in your mouth over the offending area. This can sometimes help, but you have to do it several times a day.
If I were you I would certainly go elsewhere for my dentistry.

A sore gum can really really ache, and if they took an xray and saw nothing wrong with the tooth then it should settle in a bit. Keep the area really really clean (don't worry if it bleeds a bit when you brush) and use warm salt water mouthwashes after you've eaten. Are you using the corsodyl too?

hugoagogo · 13/01/2019 10:38

Could it be your sinuses, have you had a cold?

Knowivedonewrong · 13/01/2019 10:53

Have you tried using some sensitive toothpaste. I find that helps.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 13/01/2019 11:20

Thanks all! I really appreciate it!

I’m 30 and have had all my wisdom teeth through

They’ve done the appointments this way for as long as I’ve used them (20+ years) and it does work generally but tricky with work so I can’t just nip off and know when I’ll be back. I’m generally very happy with them but I usually aim to go on the days “my” dentist is running checkups but on this occasion I couldn’t so I wasn’t familiar with this dentist and her speedy ways!

I’ve actually woken up with a cold and wondered if it was my sinuses causing it but thought it might not be as it’s the lower jaw rAther then the upper!

I will give it a couple of days of using salt water and/or corsdyl (should I do both or is one better then the other?) and re evaluate!

It still hurts! I can’t get to the dentist until next Monday, is there anything I can do to stop it hurting other then popping painkillers regularly?!

It could possibly be teeth grinding, bruxism, in the night. Can make the jaw hurt like hell as if you've got a raging abscess. Dentist would probably have mentioned it tho so probably not.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/01/2019 15:06

Thank you. I’m extremely stressed right now so I wonder if it could be that at night.

Dentist mentioned inflamed gum and sent me away without mentioning anything else so I’m not convinced!

In the area of pain, is your wisdom tooth completely through? It sounds like the pain I get when my partially through wisdom tooth gets infected. If you had an infection or abscess somewhere i think it would feel like that. Although you would think the dentist would have noticed that.

Sinus infection/ pain can also sometimes feel like its in your jaw? And I have read that an untreated tooth/ mouth infection can move into throat so they could be linked.

I find ibuprofen better for toothache and i think you can take paracetamol at the same time if still sore.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/01/2019 18:15

Thank you.

I think I had that wisdom tooth removed (I have an overcrowded mouth and am never sure what teeth I have and what we’re removed Hmm) but it feels slightly more forward then a wisdom tooth.

How would I know if I’ve been grinding my teeth or clenching in my sleep?

It weirdly feels better if I chew gum constantly

I have (diagnosed) health anxiety and my head says it’s clearly referred pain from my heart Confused

Just recovering from an abscess that has wiped out the last week, I really sympathise. Firstly, I found Corsodyl irritated my gums, warm/hot salt water was much more soothing. The other possibility is ear infection...I have a chronic ear condition that if it flares, can give me jaw and/or tooth pain (radiating pain). Grinding teeth can also cause this (have had this too). I have also found that chewing gum helps. I'd get your ears checked out if you can, just to rule it out. I hope you feel better soon OP Flowers

bluebell2017 · 16/01/2019 23:00

I had a tooth cracked from front to back, so it didn't show on an x-ray. The crack only became apparent when the dentist started to fill the tooth. I think someone needs to take a second look.

In the meantime, have you tried gengigel? It's a gel you apply directly to the tooth or gum and it has a numbing effect. I have found it helpful in the past. You can buy it from the pharmacy.

thegreatbeyond · 16/01/2019 23:08

Sometimes, it can seem as if teeth hurt but it's actually an ear infection. Perhaps this is the case, if an x-ray hasn't shown evidence of other complaints?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 16/01/2019 23:11

It's likely an ent infection causing the pain go and see gp.

Meanwhile if tooth pain is very bad you can go to a and e they won't treat it but they will give painkillers and anti booties

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 17/01/2019 00:10

Thank you!

I assumed ear and sinus issues would affect my upper jaw (I’ve absolutely nothing to base this on btw!) whereas this pain is in my lower jaw?

It’s so frustrating! If it’s teeth grinding/jaw clenching, is there anything I can do to stop doing it?

Thank you again!

OP, no, when my ear infections flare, the pain is in my bottom teeth and jaw (jaw pain is actually largely due to raised lymph glands). I reckon this is going to be your answer. Go and see your GP to get that ruled in/out. If you are teeth grinding at night, your dentist should be able to recommend a guard you wear during the night. I am sure this is sortable. To be honest, I'd rather have all of this than the bloody pain I've had this weekend with my abscess!!

@IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece I know this is an old post but just wondering if you could update. What worked for you , if you sorted it . I'm the same at the moment!
