Do you think you'll live to see 80?

Life expectancy for a woman in the UK is about 82. Do you think you'll make it that far? Assuming no freak accidents, etc.

My life expectancy is less, because of type 1 diabetes. I like to think that because of medical advances I'll claw a few years back along the way as I age, hopefully people my age will be in better shape in mid and later life than past generations of diabetics. I think probably we all hope we'll get a few more years though!

Are you hopeful you'll get to 80 or more?

Not sure. I eat healthy, am relatively fit but I used to smoke and drink. Don't particularly live old enough to end in a nursing home though. If I'm still around in my late 70's them I might have to take up smoking and drinking again Grin

I'll be happy with 70, no more than that, I'm 62 and a life long smoker, so don't expect much, quite surprised I've lasted this long tbh.

Both sides of the family tend to be fairly long lived, dms side especially where we have a fair number of 90+. What is also encouraging is that there is very little to no dementia on either side.

That said there is a strong family of diabetes in dfs side, even without being particularly overweight. I addressed my own weight issues at 40 mostly as a result of this.

I am slightly bemused at people saying 70 is elderly. My parents are that age and whilst there are a few health issues, they are full of life and activity. Dm especially has more energy than I do and I can see her rocking through for another 20 years easily

I hope so.
But I don’t think so.

I have no interest in living that long and becoming a burden. My family are all very long lived, my great grandmas both lived to 100, but they had no idea who any of us were for the last few years. All my grandparents are still alive and relatively healthy now in their 80s/90s. I've smoked since my teens so I'll probably die much younger, I'm 24 and can't imagine wanting another 60 odd years of this tbh, maybe if I had the secure jobs, decent pensions and affordable housing that my parents generation had a long life would be more appealing. My pension currently stands at £9.35 and my stress levels are such that old age has no appeal.

Still plenty of time for that to change as you're only 24.

I had no pension, property, relationship, money, proper job at that age Grin
