Do people still sew on buttons?

I just wondered after teaching my 21 year old - who will soon be leaving home - how to do this.

Yep, I do.

Recently I replaced the zip in dd2's school bag. And, once I spent about 6 hours carefully unpicking then replacing the zip in one of dd2's leather boots as the pair were fine apart from that zip.

About 2 weeks ago I repaired a coat hood for a friend who was going to chuck her dd's coat and buy new! It was about 6" of hand sewing Confused

Yes, but there’s usually a delay in doing so!

StandardPoodle · 12/01/2019 18:18

Yes, and mend holes in pockets and ripped seams.
I can stitch a buttonhole, take up hems, and could tackle sock mending though it's probably 50 years since I last mended a sock.
I used to use my Mum's treadle sewing machine which was a nightmare to thread.
You've brought back memories!

Yep, do basic darning, even socks, but that’s because I knit all our socks

Have a look on YouTube OP. Sewing is very relaxing once you get into it
It seriously isn't!!
I have tried and I hate it. I hate crafts and art and have to do it as part of my job and the kids take the piss out of me!!

elQuintoConyo · 12/01/2019 18:32

Yes i repair everything. I have a little tote bag that I put stuff to repair in, then go through it at weekend once or twice a month. I find it therapeutic.

I have a friend who is all thumbs, we exchange 1 hour of DS going to her house with me sewing on twelve buttons/three zips/re-elasticating* some pyjama bottoms. I like bartering.

I have a sewing machine and have made a few items of clothing for myself, lots for DS, loads of toys, personalised drawstring bags, clothes for teddies, costumes galore, Lego swoopbags, piles of Christmas decorations... I have had a sewing machine for 10 years+ and it is the best gift I have ever received.

  • Re-elasticating is, like, totally a real word Grin

My dh has always had his buttons fixed by the tailor at his dry cleaners.
I do my own and sometimes his if I have time.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 12/01/2019 18:33

Yes! - it means I can have a rummage in my button jar!!Grin

elQuintoConyo · 12/01/2019 18:36

Oh the button jar 😍 MothertotheLordofmisrule i think playing in my DGM's button tin and my DM's wooden sewing box (that opened both sides like wings!) got me hooked on sewing.

thismeansnothing · 12/01/2019 18:41

Of course! I ain't buying DD new school shirts every time a button pings off.

Ikabod · 12/01/2019 20:15

I can't believe people would throw something away because a button fell off Shock
I've converted my DH to taking his shoes down to Timpsons for a re-sole rather than just chucking them out.
Mind you I'm dreadful - I wear my clothes until they're full of holes and falling apart before I'll get rid of them (and then I put them in a scraps bag in case they'd be good for a sewing project Grin)

DareDevil223 · 12/01/2019 21:31

I'm pretty useless at sewing but even I can (and do) sew on a button, mend a tear or fix a hem. Still a useful life skill imo.

Oldraver · 12/01/2019 21:43

I hate sewing buttons on, so OH usually does it.

BigStripeyBastard · 12/01/2019 21:47

I can use a sewing machine, I will sew on buttons, mend hems, pockets, small pulls/tears/seams etc but I'm afraid I don't darn socks. I buy 7-packs of identical black socks and just throw out ones that develop holes and re-pair the remaining socks. When I get to critical sock-shortage numbers, I just buy another 7 pack of socks. I estimate I spend approximately £10 a year on socks.
I don't feel that is excessive. 😅

CMOTDibbler · 12/01/2019 21:58

Yes, of course. I can darn, but wouldn't do socks apart from my lovely mohair ones. I can fix most things (and dress make from scratch), but if a zip goes on a dress I do take it to someone as I hate replacing long zips and she does it much better than me.
