Minor prang, insurance quote now £900!! Is this right?!

I drive a Nissan qashquai, so standard mum car. I had a minor collision in October which hasn't been fully processed yet (so they don't know the full value although quotes for repair came in at 900).

By minor collision, I thought she was moving off, she hesitated, unrolled into the back of her at 5mph.

This was my first incident in ten years of driving.

Our combined insurance has shot up to 900!!! And even without me on the car, my husbands too (technically his car and I am the named driver). I am completely horrified! Especially for my husband!

Is this normal? It seems so excessive! Are they doing worst case scenario until they get the final bill?

Help a we can't afford this.

Ouch. I would shop around for a better deal, if you can find one. The problem is that this was a blameworthy accident on your part, and insurance companies are pretty ferocious over them.

babydreamer1 · 12/01/2019 07:51

Is this with the same company? Do a comparison search and also try Direct Line, you might find they are much cheaper. My new quotes were 1/4 of my renewal last year. Many insurance companies don't reward customer loyalty

Banjax · 12/01/2019 07:55

Yes, we'll be shopping around for sure, but im so shocked that it's more than doubled!

It was 400 last year!

Is there any way of getting around this? Obviously sticking an excess as high as possible but other than that?

Protecting your no claims would have helped.

Banjax · 12/01/2019 08:00

You can't build up NCB while a named driver AFAIK

Sorry, I think some companies offer a discount.

PattiStanger · 12/01/2019 08:08

Unless the OP has a time machine what's the point of suggesting something she should have done in the past?

Car insurance isn't a logical science, I'm sure you know that. So no point wasting time trying to work it out, hit all the comparison sites and juggle about the options and see what you get. You should always be able to find cheaper than your renewal quote.

Finfintytint · 12/01/2019 08:14

Patti, the op asked why she thought it was so excessive.

MongerTruffle · 12/01/2019 08:20

babydreamer Direct Line have always been the most expensive for me!

Tiredeyes21 · 12/01/2019 08:23

Shop around, I had a minor bump three years ago, total cost about £3000 for both cars rob fixed. Mine has only gone up by about 2/3 a month

smallchair · 12/01/2019 08:28

It may be high because the claim isn't settled yet. I had an accident that took 3 years to close the claim because fault was disputed. I had higher than usual premiums (but only by around £200, not as high as OP) in that time because many insurers wouldn't even quote.

Banjax · 12/01/2019 08:30

Tired eyes, who was your insurance with pls?

Does anybody know how long it will take? Quotes for repair were coming in at 900..... which I think isn't that expensive considering.,

Shop around. I used to pay around £900 as an inexperienced London driver, and had a minor bump. My next quote was nearer £5000! Needless to say I shopped around, but still had to pay £1500

Try adding one of your parents (with a clean licence and insurance history) as a named driver too. That might bring it down. I had my dad on mine for years as he saved me a fortune yet lived hundreds of miles away and never drove it!

I saved my dp a couple of hundred quid by going on as a named driver when he had a prang.

MrsJBaptiste · 12/01/2019 09:48

Unfortunately my insurance shot up (£350 - £800) after I had a claim. The fault came in at 50/50 although to this day, I'd say it was not my fault, but my insurance quotes all went up substantially even though I shopped around.

Lushlemming · 12/01/2019 10:11

An "open claim" is treated the same as an "at fault" claim.

Unfortunately your policy has been loaded as if you were to blame for the collision. There is NOTHING you can do about this and it will be pointless shopping around as no company will want you, they dont know what the injuries or claim amounts to yet, it could (in theory) be millions.

You'll just have to suck it up and pay. There is no way of reducing the quote while the claim is still active.

Banjax · 12/01/2019 10:48

Well as I rearended her, its definitely my fault so....maybe it just it that much😭😭

Our insurance went up when dh was driven into in a car park (old guy who couldn’t turn his head, checked to see if it was clear before getting into the car and turned it on Shock) - old guy admitted complete liability but it still increased our costs, despite having protected claims (which is a bit of a swizz as it protects your percentage but they can still increase the base charge that charge you a percentage of).

Anyhow, it’s always worth checking prices, if only to depress yourself that you have had to pay more but it could be worse.

However if your claim is open then check to see the prices if paid monthly and any cancellation charges. Then as soon as the case is closed, get quotes to see if it’s any cheaper (once you take cancellation costs into consideration).

You may well find that it’s much cheaper to do this than to wait a full year to renew...

Tiredeyes21 · 12/01/2019 19:31

I was with Aviva OP... they were really really really good. Especially as the other party made a false claim of whiplash....Aviva actually took it to court as they didn’t believe the claim. I had to attend and so did the other driver claiming it. Aviva paid for a top barrister from London to come up for it.... We won.... and the claim was kicked out!

Banjax · 16/01/2019 20:58

Hi guys, just want to say: I found insurance at £500 with me as a named driver through Elephant insurance. So if anybody is in a similar position, give them a go. I did commit to a £1k excess though. Al other quotes came in at 900-1200.

Thanks for all your help x

My car was written off a few years ago I was in bed when it happened so wasn’t driving or anything
My insurance on my other car went from £30 a month to £110 a month
After 2 years though I stopped to a different insurer and got it back to £35 a month
