If you work with children but are not a teacher or paediatrician, what do you do?!

Just that really. After 5 years as a SAHM
it is time for me to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I know I want to work with children, and I’m sure there are heaps of jobs I haven’t thought about/perhaps don’t know about... so hit me Smile

Child minder, museum worker, children's farm worker, librarian, shoe fitter, school nurse, children's centre manager, TA (well you said not a teacher), school bursar, careers person, run classes to teach some skill you have, start your own business e.g. pottery painting shop...
(Not me but just brainstorming!)

hmmwhatatodo · 11/01/2019 21:56

Isnt it expensive to become a play therapist?

Goneback2school · 11/01/2019 22:00

Was a radiographer in a specialist children's hospital, but moved to a more senior post, as the Lead Paediatric Radiographer in a very large adult hospital that has a large paediatric service. Love my job

OP thanks, it's a great job.

Reading your thread with interest as I really want to retrain in the next few years (I have a related but non-vocational degree but it's years old now).

I don’t work alley with children but work with a lot of families and therefore a lot of children; I work placing homeless families in more permanent accommodation

AlbertaWildRose · 11/01/2019 22:11

School librarian

OurChristmasMiracle · 11/01/2019 22:17

Admin and finance assistant for a children’s centre. (Don’t work directly with the kids but it’s term time only and flexible hours).

I’m a childminder but also work 3 afternoons a week at a women’s refuge as a sessional playworker. It’s an incredible job, I’ve always wanted to do it, fingers crossed a full time role comes up so I can make the switch

dontknowwhattodo80 · 12/01/2019 09:17

I work for a family support charity. Love what I do and am looking to do some sort of qualification in the next few years, just not sure what!

RubixCubix · 12/01/2019 09:31

I'm a playworker. Work with children from 3-17. Also a beaver/cub leader.

Kaykay06 · 12/01/2019 09:35

Quite a few paediatric nurses on here, I also work on a children’s ward, and work with nursery nurses, clinical support workers, & social workers to name a few. I’m heading to a community path soon though

mrsmaggiemistletoe · 12/01/2019 17:58

Thanks so much for all your responses. Nursing sadly out for childcare reasons - DH works overseas regularly and no family nearby so I need to be at home in the night time! But lots of food for thought here and I’m planning to get asking around for work experience next.
