I need a weekend job and have applied to Next and McD and they have both turned me away at application stage. I feel really shit. Granted I dont have experience in retail but I've mainly worked in admin but I know my skills are transferable. Just feel like a total loser.

I really need a job on the weekend as we need some money. Ive just had a baby and i can't go back to work due to childcare costs.

What am I doing wrong? Do they just want school/ college kids? I know they are probably in high demand but I've tried applying to so many. Ive tried the local supermarkets but only Tesco had a suitable job which I have applied for but Im not holding my hopes even for an interview.

Whattodo I went in and was speaking to a lovely manager, left cv in but she said to apply online that they have no say in the process, applied and was rejected straight away:(

Dowser · 12/01/2019 11:32

Nothingontelly
I worked in a betting shop in the 60 s
I really enjoyed it.as well

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 11:42

Yes most places want fully flexible.

Fully flexible and cheap is even better!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 12/01/2019 11:46

The company I work for are usually looking for staff, it's minimum wage and zero hours contract but it does work well with school runs.

Pm me if you would like the details.

It's merchandising, going into supermarkets and setting up displays which have been arranged with the stores.

FevertreeLight · 13/01/2019 00:46

FevertreeLight I don’t think you have any understanding of how hard it is to actually sack someone.

No because I only own and run a large business.

They put them on zero hours contracts and then don't offer them any hours when their NMW increases.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 13/01/2019 01:07

They put them on zero hours contracts and then don't offer them any hours when their NMW increases.

FevertreeLight Ahh, I see. You’re under the impression McDonalds is mostly zero hour contracts.

In the last couple of years McDonalds has been moving away from zero hours contracts and every crew member is offered a guaranteed hours contract (however while most do take them, some don’t).

It costs a lot just to hire someone (incorporating paperwork, management time etc.) and that’s even before the costs of training. It is not in McDonalds interests to have a high turnover, not least because we have targets to get turnover as low as possible, and of course high turnover is not conducive to a positive atmosphere, which is what we want to foster.

While there is a place for students, we want crew that are in it for the long term and are going to be with us for years and climb the ladder.

I've just been reading another thread and people suggested to the op to try doing a shelf stacker job at supermarkets. Does anyone know - are these jobs advertised via the supermarket or do they have agencies for this. There's about 5 big supermarkets in my town and such few jobs! Sad

Sympathies OP
I'm job hunting at the moment.

I've just got back to the UK after a number of years abroad, I'm an experienced qualified teacher specialising in ESOL and I got rejected for a part time TA post last week.
I'm signed up with a supply agency but have had the grand total of ONE day supply since October.
I send dozens of CVs and application forms every months- often don't even get an acknowledgement. It's very hard not to take it personally.

lynnepot · 13/01/2019 09:01

Just make sure you tailor your cv for each job. Don't go sending the same generic cv to every job application.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 13/01/2019 09:09

Regarding supermarket jobs DS worked for Waitrose and they only seemed to advertise online, though January is not the best time for supermarket jobs as they will have taken on people for Xmas and kept on the staff they wanted. Best time for supermarket jobs is October when they start interviewing for Xmas though there maybe odd ones at other times

Aridane · 13/01/2019 09:14

Retail is competitive to get into and (Macdonalds apart!) you will be disadvantaged not having retail experience

OrdinarySnowflake · 13/01/2019 09:31

Op - if you are still reading, dress smartly and go into local estate agencies and letting agencies and ask if they are looking for anyone "with local knowledge" to do weekend and evening viewings. (Or email if that seems easier!)

Many want flexible staff outside of office hours to do open house days, but don't want their clients left with a teen who can't make eye contact. A grown adult who can just supervise as the client walks round, answer questions about how far away the train station is and the local schools, and what the parking is like in the local high street, is much more likely to get them the sale.

Sparklingbrook · 13/01/2019 09:44

Here's the Waitrose/John Lewis jobs site. AFAIK they pay everybody the same to start, none of the splits between ages nonsense which is good.

I am not sure there's any such thing as a 'shelf stacker' job at some supermarkets. You will be expected to go on tills, collect trolleys, clean the shelves etc.

NeedASaturdayJob · 13/01/2019 09:58

BookWitch sorry to hear you're going through it too. Flowers it's so demoralising.

Sparklingbrook my nearest Waitrose/jl is miles away! Would love one close by. Smile

Last night I dreamt I'd gone into tesco to talk to a manager about jobs available! I'm obsessed! I need a job!

Oh no thats a shame.

Keep searching. Tell everyone you know that you are looking, in case they see anything.

nannybeach · 13/01/2019 19:21

coldiz, we watched a video as if we were going shopping, firstly there were no trollies outside the store, just inside the store doors was a pile of boxes about 10 feet high, I said they were dangerous, could fall onsome one or be a fire hazzard. Inside the store a very elderly man asked where he eggs were, he was told turn this and that way, I felt he should have been sown t the eggs. After watching the video, we were asked to make comments, these were mine, my friend said these werent what they wanted to hear. We also had to fill in a psycological profile pages and pages, for stocking tins. I have a friend and relative who both work for sainsbury both very uphappy with the way the stores are being run these days.

NeedASaturdayJob · 07/02/2019 17:34

hi I just wanted to give you guys an update. I finally found a part time weekend job at a call centre.

But before that i got rejected from.
Next
Dunelm mill
McDonald's
Tesco - twice
Hospital cleaner
Local private hospital admin
And a gazillion other places I tried but heard nothing back from.

I felt like crap getting rejection after rejection. I felt so unemployable but im so relieved I've finally found something. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

My local McDonalds is mostly employed by 16/17 yr olds who have no idea how to greet/speak to people. They grunt, don’t smile and are pretty unapproachable.

Sorry you got rejected. You would be miles better than these shits. Beggars belief how they get jobs.

Savblanc1 · 13/01/2020 16:52

Hi

As your a manager at Macdonalds I wonder whether you could answer a couple of queries.
My son applied last Thursday 9th Jan and got a rejection the next morning. He decided to reapply that evening 10th (changing a few of his answered in the situation quiz and also elaborating on his answer as to what he could bring Mac Donald’s. He got the automated e mail acknowledging his application but when he looks on line on the application tracker it only lists his unsuccessful application. Doesn’t list his second application saying received, not selected or anything. It’s now 3 days since he applied and the first application he got a response the next day. I hope you understand what I’m asking and sorry it’s a bit long winded! Thanks

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue - one for you! 🙂

janj2301 · 13/01/2020 18:03

Not all retailers pay youngsters less. I work on the tills at b&q and on the bottom rung we all get the same regardless of age. I'm 66, retired from a stressful office job but wanted to keep my hand in

RB68 · 13/01/2020 18:22

what annoys me is that if you have other qualifications and experience they prejudge that you will be bored and move on without thinking about why you are applying for a job. Sometimes people want fixed hours, reduced responsibility and something that fits around family for a time

ALongHardWinter · 13/01/2020 18:28

Maybe you're overqualified? A previous poster said that she was turned down because they thought she'd find the job 'too easy and be bored after 6 months and would then leave', maybe this was the case with you?

Vnailer · 13/01/2020 19:12

I'm currently a McDs manager and I got turned awake on my first application so I applied again answered temhe questions different and got the job. The initial online application is done by a computer then when the computer says yes to someone it goes to a human to offer you interview times. Honestly don't lose too much hope apply again or try another store.
