Not sure what to make of DS illness

DS is 2. He had a fever on weds morning, but low grade and no other symptoms. Came right down with a dose of ibuprofen, and didn’t need another dose for 7/8 hours.

He was the same yesterday morning, still no symptoms and 100% fine in himself, temp was 37.8 (so v mild) so he had a dose of Calpol and went to childcare - I thought maybe a molar coming in as one cheek quite red.

I got a call at 5 as I was about to collect him, that his temp was 42 in one ear and 40.8 in the other (?!?!) so sprinted to collect him and whisked him straight to the GP as an emergency.

By the time he saw the GP half an hour later, a dose of ibuprofen and ten minutes in the cool air with his coat open had reduced it to 38.8.

He was chatting, laughing, eating, drinking, and absolutely fine throughout- albeit horribly warm and very red when I collected him. He can talk and understands the concepts of “sore” and “warm” and says there’s no pain anywhere says he “was just a bit warm at nursey” Confused.

I’m of course at home with him today but he’s just as he has been- no symptoms, not altered behaviour, eating and drinking, asthma well controlled and ibuprofen lasting a good while before temp rises again.

Only things dr saw was red tonsils but no pus- have prescription for ABs in case he gets pus on his tonsils over the weekend (he’s had it many times as a baby and I know what to look for) but other than that, he was stumped too.

Any ideas MN? 42 degrees (which I checked again with the nursery thermometer myself and it was 41) is dangerous- and I’m a bit Confused

Are you sure their thermometer is accurate? Is yours? Did you try taking your own temperature to see if it gave a normal result for that?

That was my concern - that theirs is reading high.

I use underarm and add 0.5- nursery is ear thermometer. GP also used ear, but that was 30 mins after ibuprofen and being outside for 10.

I might suggest nursery test it on a well child (some of their own children are at the nursery) and/or a well member of staff to be sure it’s accurate

Because honestly, I was horrified

Nursery insistent that their thermometer is working perfectly - tested it on themselves etc. etc.

He still has no symptoms, except that his temp is creeping back up 7/8 hours following a dose of ibuprofen. I held off giving more medicine this afternoon to see how high his temp was 'really' - and we got to 39.2 before I cracked and gave another dose....

Very confused and wondering if maybe roseola, given this is now the third day of this? Or could it be something more serious?
He is, still ,absolutely fine in himself.
