Breakfast for a 4/5 year old

Morning,
Im interested to see what other children of this age group have for breakfast as we are looking to change our sons.
Most days he has:

Cereal or porridge
Yogurt
Belvita breakfast bar or similar
Piece of fruit

It seems a fair bit of food and too much sugar so my dp wants to reduce it but i believe he needs this amount of food (he always says he is hungry) but i am very happy to reduce the sugary stuff but im stuck for ideas other than fruit (which he also gets a school as morn snack)

He is tall and slim, i have no concerns over his weight at the moment.

What does breakfast for your 4/5 year old look like please?

Mine has a bowl of cereal (shreddies and Cheerios usually) and 1/2-1 piece of toast with jam. Sometimes I make a 'banana milkshake' which is just banana blended with whole milk.

My ds is 5 and he has a bowl of fruit every day then he likes loads of different things; bagels with cream cheese, crumpets, pancakes, croissants, toast etc. He eats quite a lot for breakfast but I think his school dinner portions are small.

Between 7 year old and nearly 5 year old, they have any of the following:

Eggo waffles
3 x weetabix
Oatmeal
Chocolate cheerios
Egg on toast
Toast w/ jam
Toast w/ honey

I microwave some scrambled egg but mostly DD has a bowl of rice crispies or a crumpet with some raspberries or strawberries. Shes not a morning person and would rather eat later I think.

My 3 DC like beans on toast for breakfast - with butter on the toast and a glass of milk, plus a grating of cheddar over the top. The bread varies (sometimes pittas, bagels etc). I also have one DC who likes a 'snacky' breakfast - slices of cheese and ham, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, fruit. I normally have all that out of the fridge to do the packed lunches! Bagels with cream cheese also v popular, as are fried egg sandwiches. Low sugar cereals and wholemeal toast (with butter, peanut butter or choc spread) are always available. I normally limit them to one 'sweet' breakfast item - ie they can have a hot chocolate and plain weetabix, but not sugar on the weetabix as well as in the hot chocolate. Or sugary cereal (eg cheerios) but plain milk to drink. Or toast with honey, but plain milk or unsweetened cereal. No complaints generally with this strategy.

I make my 6 year olds pancakes most mornings.
Whole wheat flour
Baking powder
Duck egg
Milk

Serve with honey and fruit. Easy and healthy ane mine love it.

My son at that age had a big bowl of porridge, a yogurt, banana and a smoothie. He barely ate the rest of the day.

My daughter at that age had half a crumpet or a few spoons of cereal. A smoothie.

I’m amazed that pp think teacakes / hot cross buns have less sugar than toast with jam, unless you are drenching the toast with jam. A tablespoon of jam has 7.3g sugar (and I reckon I put closer to a teaspoon than a tablespoon on mine) a fruit teacake has 8.9g sugar.
And on eggs, eggy toast takes 2 minutes flat. My kids often have it for breakfast. Pancakes take a bit longer but you can make the batter the day before and keep in the fridge.

But if your DS is happy with his breakfast, who cares? It's healthy and filling. You're not just handing over the biscuit tin, you've obviously thought about it. Don't let your DH undermine your confidence. If he's got a better idea, he can sort it out can't he?

But to join in the discussion: After much trial and error we (similar age DS and adults) have hit on this as our ideal breakfast, in that it takes only a few minutes to prep and is very filling: Porridge oats, raisins, and nuts eaten like muesli with cold milk, with a banana chopped up on top. We mix up the oats, raisins and nuts ahead of time in a tupperware, so it's as easy to serve as cereal but healthier.

Lots of milk adds the protein, and uncooked oats and bananas are great fiber. Raisins and nuts make it tasty without adding lots of sugar. DS has as many bowls as he wants to eat. Hot porridge, eggs, anything that's cooked is too time consuming. I find I get hungry half way through the morning if I just have toast and jam, and DS definitely does. Cereals of any kind are not filling enough/more expensive/have too much sugar.

do greek yoghurt with berries from the freezer, lovely and tasty. I get a cup of them and bung them in the microwave for 30 sec before adding to yoghurt. great in porridge too.

Because the OP, like many parents, want to introduce new foods, variety, different nutrients to ensure their child doesn’t become one of those adults who ONLY eat xyz but rather open and willing to different foods.

My 4yr old has cheese spread on toast for breakfast he loves it's! I also give him a bowl of fruit and a glass of milk and it seems to keep him fairly full for a while

I know my kids could probably eat a bit healthier at breakfast time but over all their diet is good and they eat a wide variety of foods.
My dc are 14,8,5 and 4
They have choice of
Crumpets
Fruit toast
Bagels
Pancakes
Waffles (not everyday though)
Cereal
In addition have to have some fruit.
I'm going to start offering eggs though I think as they all like them.

It is not unusual for my slim 5yr old to have porridge, an egg and soldiers and a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Breakfast has always been one of her biggest meals. It all balances out - she often has a tiny (or sometimes no) dinner.

DS has an apple, then toast with butter and marmite or Fruit and Fibre. Sometimes he has fishfingers.

Youngest ds is almost 5 (we have an 8 year old and an 11 year old too). This week for breakfast he has had cereal, toast, scrambled eggs, yogurt and granola. On Tuesday he went to breakfast club and had cereal there.

Boring or sensible cereal (Mostly)
And 1-2 slices of toast, maybe a banana.

Might have brioche or pan au chocolat occasionally

Sometimes pancakes with fruit on top and a drizzle of cereal. Sometimes squirty cream.

I try to watch his sugar intake overall, but he's very slim so I try to get him to have a good breakfast
