York or Durham for mini break?

Coming from Scotland for long weekend in February. Looking for nice walks, shops to browse, maybe theatre/bookshop cafes/places to visit?
What do you think wise mumsnetters?

York definitely.

York.

York - definitely visit The Shambles if you go to York.

York has more attraction-wise. Durham is largely centred round the cathedral with a high street that follows the Bailey down into the modern town. The botanical gardens are great, but out of town slightly. Versus York, which has the minster, then the castle then the shambles and Betty's tea rooms. Hands down there's over a days worth of activities in York (more really including lots more museums) but Durham you could happily spend a half day and have seen the majority of it. Durham IS beautiful though. If you have time to do a drop in of Durham on the way home, I'd recommend Vennels cafe (located in between Scorpion shoes outlet and off Silver Street) the carrot cake is amazing.

definitely York lots to do and see museums, the shambles, the roman wall to walk round, the train museum, the castle and museum, the medieval town gates, look out for the pub with the roman baths underneath, bettys for afternoon tea, yorvic, the dungeon attraction

York

y0rkier0se · 10/01/2019 22:36

Have you considered Chester?

Honeyroar · 10/01/2019 22:38

York for me. We had a lovely mini break there.

(Chester doesn’t do it for me personally)

ShatnersBassoon · 10/01/2019 22:41

York, without a doubt. I struggled to fill a weekend in Durham.

Honeyroar · 10/01/2019 22:46

I guess if you did Durham you could go out to the coast and countryside to walk?

SallyCinnamon3009 · 10/01/2019 22:47

York everytime.

Durham and Chester are nowhere near as nice and there aren't as many things to do

Brilliant, so helpful to have a unanimous vote!
