Quick breakfast for teenager

DS is nearly 15. He hates getting up in the morning, and therefore leaves it to the last possible moment. He has "no time" for breakfast unless it can literally be prepared and eaten in 2-3 minutes. This rules out cereal or toast or anything cooked.

I'm not a parent that panders so up till now I've adopted the policy that if he won't get up in time to have breakfast he goes hungry. Unfortunately DS chooses to go hungry. I would still say that was up to him, but last term he starting complaining of dizziness, dozing off in lessons and struggling to concentrate. I'm fairly sure these must be related to not eating breakfast. As I can't force him to eat or get up earlier, I'm therefore prepared to provide foodstuffs that can be eaten in his required quick time frame.

I picked up a packet of so called "breakfast muffins" from the supermarket earlier in the week and he has been eating them - hooray! However they are quite high in fat and expensive, so I'm looking for better/healthier ideas. Happy to cook in advance if necessary (so I'm wondering about homemade muffins - both fruit and savoury, but not sure I have any recipes).

Does anyone have any suggestions for quick breakfasts? It probably literally needs to be grab and go - I've bought things like crumpets and bagels in the past and even they were too much hassle to put spread on. He also cycles to school so can't eat en-route.

When I was a teen I had a jam donut for breakfast once I got to school. I've never been obese and have all my teeth so I reckon sugary breakfast better than nothing.

Ottolenghi's Granola Bars are brilliant and you can make double and they last for ages.

I think I'd just do a ham and cheese sandwich the night before.

I buy the little individually wrapped brioche rolls and croissants for the days that ds is being exceptionally slow and doesn’t have time for cereal or toast. He takes one of these with him with a banana to have on the bus.

DS16 is similar and we have it down to one of the following;

Overnight oats (favourites are black cherry or pear and cinnamon).

Protein smoothie (banana, 20g oats, scoop of protein powder, tbsp peanut butter, frozen berries) we prep in fridge the night before ready to blitz.

A slice of banana loaf and glass of milk.

Does he eat at lunchtime? Many dont I find. If he does eat then you coukd put snacks in his bag. If not then the case then ask what he will eat. I think of it as having lunch at breakfast time so cook a burger sandwich or sausage roll- not the healthiest but I know it will be eaten and keeps them going through the day as lunch isnt eaten.

Perhaps an unpopular comment, but dozing off in lessons is pretty serious. Obviously you're a great mum in wanting to help him and find different quick recipes so he can have breakfast, but surely part of it has to be challenging him to get up earlier?! What's he going to do when he has an actual job?! Falling asleep will get him sacked! I would recommend setting a sensible time when he has to be up to have some toast, cereal whatever, not ridiculously early, and if he doesn't do it, no xbox etc. He needs to prepare for the reality of work, where sadly mum won't be there to make him flapjacks to eat so he can turn himself out of 2 minutes before he has to leave the house...

It's him, not you OP that needs to change!
