Menstruating so banished resulting in death.

Years ago, radio 4 had a fascinating programme about this practice and the infertility issues it could cause if a woman ovulated early in her cycle.

Today reading about this practice in Nepal where you can die of exposure made me realise it may be a more common practice than I realised.

Are women considered unclean when the result of this nine months later is a beautiful child??

If you have your period you won't be having a child. You're not banished when you ovulate.

That's beside the point though. Yes it does happen more than you'd think and it's horrifying.

The radio 4 programme said these women were isolated for 12 days. They required purification rituals or something. So it is possible to ovulate before then hence the fertility issues.

Quite probably if that's the length of time. I'm sure there are charities who try to fight this kind of thing. Must go off and Google.

I learnt about how bad women's lives in Nepal were from the Scummy Mummies podcast (www.scummymummies.com/podcast episode 125 - it's a really sobering listen).

The Scummy Mummies were there with Practical Action a charity that helps people in developing countries help themselves.

The women in Nepal had to do hard physical work including farming and hauling goods up a mountain and practical action helped install a pulley system that saved them having to physically carry everything up. I think a lot of the men worked away to earn money, so the women kept things going at home.

There was a really high incidences of prolapse due to them doing this sort of work very recently after giving birth. I meant to post something on here at the time about it because I think the charity sounds like it is one that is really worthwhile, but didn't get round to it. So thanks for that OP, you've reminded me and I've done it Smile.
