Has anyone bought a adult commuter scooter?

Thinking of getting a adult scooter, not a electric type one just a adult scooter to scoot 3 1/2 miles and back every day due to horrendous traffic.
I'm not confident on a bike and certainly not confident on the roads.

Has anyone used one and do you get stared at?

I bought an adult micro scooter. But I'll be honest, it's hard work. I would not want to commute that distance daily, especially if there are any hills.

A bike would be way better and faster.

That's about 1hr walking, great exercise.

Solasum · 10/01/2019 16:52

I have one. It is hard work, and you do gets looks from others. Miles better than bus or tube though!

AgathaMisty · 10/01/2019 17:43

I have a non-electric one and it's a godsend! I take it you'd be going along the pavement? That's what I do. I recommend checking the quality of the pavements on that route as some are full of cracks and holes so you might have trouble on those parts.

I don't really pay attention to people looking as I'm too busy concentrating but people shout out things quite often because I wear heels and businesswear on mine. It's always very positive though!

Nowadays there are so many more about than I first got mine so people barely notice me anymore compared to 5 years ago.

Bear in mind that they're not ideal when it rains because you can't use an umbrella.

The bellend whose child attends the same school as mine. There’s a parent who has a large adult one and he’s very good using sidewalks when road traffic is dangerous but sidewalks are empty, walking it when sidewalks are packed, etc. The new parent whizzes along their kid on busy sidewalks warning the rest of us they’re about to plough through us pedestrians and whizz along the road (no helmet, no protective/high visibility clothes) dodging irate drivers like he’s reliving atari’s frogman. Just a matter of time before twat falls on his face. Shock

I have one, Adult Microscooter Flex (in purple - thats important!! ) Its great for going out with Dgcs.. but do beware of potholes! I really came a cropper a year or so ago hitting one, and because I was holding onto handlebars and forgot to put hands out landed flat on my face! Yup, grazed nose and forehead and 2 black eyes!.. Its hasnt put me off though...and I am over 60

As purpleelk mentioned, it's important to use them responsibly on the pavement. For me, the pedestrian very much has priority. I go fairly slowly and always go around people. It actually takes a lot of concentration to watch out for pedestrians - I feel like I have to watch out for the both of us as they tend to be in their own world - plus you have to look at the pavement to make sure there are no holes.

I don't use it when pavements are packed. You might have to figure in extra time in you plan to go in rush hour!

AgathaMisty · 10/01/2019 17:58

Oh no Laska2Meryls, that sounds nasty! I've only fallen off once in the 5 years I've had it and it was a similar situation; I went into a pothole at night. Luckily I only grazed my hand.

Laska2Meryls · 10/01/2019 18:21

Yes , It was just outside work as well! I felt a total twit when people rushed and picked me up!! . The good thing is that although I was on the river quay, I fell the right way , but then the other I would have just got wet (and probably lost my lovely scooter!)..

I tend to scoot on the road here when I can , but we are rural , so not so many pavements (or cars) .. However I am v. careful (now esp of potholes) and if I am on the pavement 1 am always mindful of pedestrians.. ..

I now have pink/purple hair to go with my scooter and being an old gimmer /granny I find people are usually friendly / amused/possibly perplexed. Anyway I have never had anyone shout at me .. I love scooting, it makes me very happy !

RegularShowRules · 10/01/2019 18:23

Thanks for the replies yes I will be riding on the pavement but slowly.

To the posters who have a scooter How heavy are the scooters once folded?
Where did you buy you it from?

Mine is 4kg because it's actually Micro Luggage. I use it to carry my work things as I work between different offices.
