Booked a holiday - 17 days after Brexit

DH and I booked a holiday the other night to Cyrpus. Then afterwards DH asked when are we due to leave the EU. I said I think it's the 29 March. DH replied with, well, let's hope it doesn't go tits up then.

So... Should we be concerned it will be so close after the date?

It doesn’t refer to now because UK would be included in the EU citizens and wouldn’t warrant an extra section.

Hmmmm... This off the hoof holiday is sounding more troublesome

Nobody can tell you, because nobody knows. That's the only thing anyone can say with any certainty.

Your insurance almost certainly won't cover Brexit though, I don't think any travel insurers are.

According to ABTA "Customers who book a package holiday with a UK travel company enjoy the most comprehensive consumer protection: if you book a package, your holiday will be protected under the Package Travel Regulations, meaning you have a right to a full refund if your holiday can no longer be provided."

And then surely, if a flight is delayed, and your insurance covers flight delays, you are covered?

Insurance and airlines may not cover you or provide compensation as Brexit is similar to a natural disaster, as in, it is out of the hands of the companies like 'force majeur'.

Honestly I would consider cancelling or at least rescheduling but appreciate that may not be possible.

Otherwise plan for delays as PPs said. Arrivals and departures will be really busy as the planes leaving depends on those arriving and passport control will be busy and complicated.

There is no rest case so no one really knows. PM May might ask for an extension and we don't really know the terms of what no deal means but if you prepare for chaos you will at least not be one of the passengers up in arms at the airport desks but happily munching snacks and reading the books you brought with you.

Good luck x

happily munching snacks and reading the books you brought with you. This is always me, regardless of Brexit or not Grin

Government advice is to make sure your passports have at least 6 months on them from when you travel.

Are you hoping to hire a car when you are there?

Who are you flying with?

cjt110 · 10/01/2019 15:24

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Our passports have at least a year on them all.

No to car hire.

Booked a holiday through Jet2.

Those are all answers in your favour at least :) fingers crossed for you.

I'd read ABTAs advice with a slight pinch of salt, just because they must be terrified of the industry crashing with everyone holding back bookings. But at the same time, it's booked now, so what will be, will be.

We're going away too.

There will be riots if people I can't go on their Easter holidays!

I'm a firm remainer but I do believe we'll be able to go to Spain in April.

cjt110 · 10/01/2019 15:34

I suppose I'm hoping that the worst that will happen is delays and needing a visa.

It didn't even occur to DH and I until we'd booked!

As I've read it, providing the UK is granted permission through airspace, they will reciprocate the agreement.

chewbecca believing isn’t knowing.
Hopefully everyone’s holidays will be ok but thinking “everything is going to be ok” is a large part of the problem

sansou · 10/01/2019 20:05

I've booked flights to Spain on the 30th March but delaying booking the accommodation in the hope of seeing positive signs that planes will actually take off as normal. We can write the cheap flights off but I'd rather not book/pay for accommodation if it all goes to pot.

ForalltheSaints · 10/01/2019 20:24

You should be more concerned about travelling over the Easter holidays when it is a late Easter. A lot depends on where you fly from I expect. Heathrow cannot cope with school holidays, Gatwick sometimes struggles, but most regional airports can cope.

Chewbecca · 10/01/2019 20:47

hopping I know but it is impossible for anyone to know in this situation so all you can do is decide what you think is most likely. I don't actually think this is a large part of the problem.
