Stupid car related question.

Should I spray pre deicer on my windscreen tonight when the overnight temperature is due to drop to 1? I'm aware that water freezes at 0 but sometimes temperatures vary. I'm new to all this business and I leave for work at 6 30 am so it's still cold and dark and I don't want to be sitting around for ages waiting for the car to defrost if possible!

I don't think it would work. You need to spray de icer on top of the ice and then it melts it

Lushlemming · 09/01/2019 13:02

No. You spray it on just before you start the car, leave it for a minute or two, then use your wipers to clear the windscreen as normal.

Pre-icer tonight and de-icer if it hasn't worked completely tomorrow morning. :)

You put it on the night before (read product instructions), ice forms but the product stops it from sticking to the screen so just squeegee the ice off in the morning. Problem is that if no frost then you end up with greasy screen and may also impregnate the rubber on side windows ending up with smears.

Use a plastic bin liner to cover the screen the night before and just remove it in the morning. You can also use a windscreen de-icer which is used in the morning with a scraper (get a good one).

Re previous comments, pre-de-icer is to prevent ice formation, de-icer is to remove ice. Former is for night before, latter is for morning after.

Would you expect ice on the windscreen at 1 degree though?
I could do with a crystal ball really.

It's weirdly dry at the moment (low humidity?) therefore there have been times where it has seemed cold enough for frost, but there hasn't actually been any scraping to do, because there isn't enough moisture in the air to turn into frost?

It does sometimes seem to get frosty even though the minimum temperature is above zero though. You can buy windscreen covers that reduce the need to defrost, but I don't know how well they work.

DaffodilPower · 09/01/2019 14:26

Just use a good spray de-icer in the morning, that way there's no problem if it doesn't frost overnight, nothing greasy on your windscreen!

Engine on, heaters on, electric window on (if you have one). Spray front and back, job's a good'un!

You can buy windscreen covers, or stick a sheet of plastic ( using the wipers - switch the ignition off whilst the wipers are up- to hold the sheet in place) . It’s a bit of a pain but reduces the depicting time next morning.

De icing!
