Learning Greek

We've booked a holiday for this year and I realised that we have pretty much always gone to Spanish speaking places.

I'd like to learn some Greek and wondered the best place to try and do this?

I was looking into apps with progress trackers the other day (professional reasons). One I explored was language learning apps. I looked at Memrise and used the learn Japanese to give it a try. Seemed like a good starting place to learn useful phrases quickly. I was more interested in its progress dashboard, so picked a language where I knew a few phrases already so could pass initial tests. It works by giving you written and spoken words, then repeatedly testing you on recalling their meaning (form both written and spoken examples). It also includes video of native speakers, giving you a useful insight into inflection, facial expression, etc.

The Greeks will really like it if you can say a few phrases, so many tourists don’t even try . Well done you.

Hope you have a good time. Lovely country, great food, friendly people but bloody hot in August !

We get the DC to use the Duolingo app for learn new words/phrases and as mentioned above, Greek people love it when you make even a little effort with their language.

Do any of your local schools offer adult education evening classes? That's where I learnt my (now very rusty) Greek.

I am a great beliver in learning the languange of the country you visit. It goes a long way. Just so happens we have only really visited spanish speaking places. Oh, and Thailand... However, that's a whole 'nother language. I can say hello and thats it!

It's a very difficult language to learn. I've lived in a Greek speaking country for nearly a decade and I can't speak it. I learnt French and Spanish before though and when I'm trying to find a Greek word I think of other languages first.

I can communicate and I think it's polite to learn phrases but I have found it easier to learn the Greek alphabet first so I can read menus, food labels and road signs etc. I saw this like cracking a code, so I can read it but not speak it.
