Just finished it and loved Elinor. Don't what to read next but missing a good book. Recommendations please!

Eleanor’s lack of social skills, food and drink oddities all become clear as the story unravels.

If you only read a third Shatner, no wonder you didn’t get it.

I loved it personally, probably my best read of 2018.

I have really tried with The Gild Finch. Just can't get in to it.
Maybe I will try again...

Just reading Captain Corelli's Mandoline - amazing

The Distracted Preacher and Other Stories (Thomas Hardy). Can't wait to go to bed.

I read a sample and was underwhelmed so didn’t bother.

The Sally Rooney one sounds good.

Bathbombs · 09/01/2019 19:27

Enjoyed Eleanor-esp as i listened to it on audible and the narration was really good
Adored Ove

Life after life and a god in ruins by Kate Atkinson are always my recommendations-both engaging and intelligent but easy enough to read.

‘The man I thought i knew’ was quite a good read too

Whisky2014 · 09/01/2019 19:27

If you only read a third Shatner, no wonder you didn’t get it. No, no, I think she got it. It's just terrible is all.

Nothisispatrick · 09/01/2019 19:30

I love Kate Atkinson, reading her new one atm

Bathbombs · 09/01/2019 19:31

Quite liked the new Kate Atkinson but not as much as the others

mary81 · 09/01/2019 19:34

Anything by Kate Atkinson
Anything by Liane Moriarty
And STANDARD DEVIATION! Has anyone else read it? My best book of 2018 by far!

irregularegular · 09/01/2019 19:34

A Man called Ove has similar kind of appeal I think?

looondonn · 09/01/2019 19:47

Educated by Tara Westover

Loooooooved it

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/01/2019 19:48

I loved all the things I never said by Celest Ng. Amazing book after Elinor

LittleSwede · 09/01/2019 20:03

For all the Over fans I recommend Britt Marie Was Here by the same author. Got a bit of an Elinor hint to it too.

Frederik Backlund, the author, sounds like a lovely chap. Following the horrible terror attack in Stockholm 2017 he wanted to do something nice for upset children of the capital, so he put opened a tab at a well known book store so that a child could purchase a children's book 'on him'. It was only for one day and definitely not a marketing ploy but it made me warm to him even more. I've read several of his books and they are all brilliant.

Woulditbeworth · 09/01/2019 20:21

I enjoyed Oliphant and have also recently enjoyed The Keeper of Lost Things (R.Hogan) and The Snow Child (E.Ivey).

I haven’t read it in ages by The Island by Victoria Hislop is also a great book.

BalloonSlayer · 09/01/2019 21:01

All you people that liked Eleanor Oliphant, what was the Jane Eyre bit supposed to be about?

BikeRunSki · 09/01/2019 21:04

I havn’t read Jane Eyre, so I don’t know!

scissorsandpen · 09/01/2019 21:10

The keeper of lost things I agree fab and and 3 things about Elsie

BalloonSlayer · 09/01/2019 21:13

Well the bit where the social worker leaves a report on the floor which Eleanor reads. All the names of the foster family and thr incidents described are from Jane Eyre. I thought it was going to turn out to be significant, ie that she was delusional but nothing seemed to come of it.

sproutlove · 09/01/2019 21:15

I much preferred the Rosie Project to Elinor Oliphant.

BunnyColvin · 09/01/2019 21:18

Why is everyone spelling this 'Elinor'? Is there a different version with that spelling?

festivetootsie · 09/01/2019 21:22

Secret Life of Bees had a similar feel for me

TheNavigator · 09/01/2019 21:27

BalloonSlayer I enjoyed the book and didn't over analyse the Jane Eyre bit - spotted the parallel and as Jane Eyre is one of Elinor's favourite books just thought 'oh, that's clever' and carried on. I really enjoyed it as a page turner.

FawnDrench · 09/01/2019 21:32

Yet another recommendation for "A man called Ove" - simply wonderful.

And quite similar in theme to Elinor.

QuilliamCakespeare · 09/01/2019 21:38

I really enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant.

I'd second the recommendation on The Power - brilliant, fascinating story.

I also love Wild Swans by Jung Chang. It's historical which isn't usually my bag but reading about the different experiences of three women in China was fascinating.

I've just downloaded Vox which was recommended to me. Not started it yet thought because I'm reading Friends Request which is crap, but I feel like I have to see it through!
