Posting for traffic...pain with chickenpox

DS2 is 6. On day 3 of chickenpox. Absolutely covered in spots but has been coping remarkably well with it.

Then a few hours ago he started saying the spots (particularly on his back) are hurting. He was quite clear they hurt not itch. At times he's been almost screaming although mostly crying.

In the end I phoned 111. They passed the call the OOH who phoned back an hour later. After asking lots of questions the dr said she could make an appt for him this evening but they probably wouldn't do anything. Or I could give him the calpol he was due at 8.30 and contact go in the morning. I chose the second option because there's not a chance I'm going to be able to get him dressed and strapped into a car seat.

So he's had the calpol (and that was his 4th dose in 24hrs so he can't have any until the morning now) but he's still in pain. Not crying anymore because I think he's exhausted. But he can't bare anything on his skin, can't bare me touching him and can't even lie down. He's in my bed on his hands and knees.

I don't know what to do. Creams have helped with itching during the day but he's now saying even they hurt his skin. Same for baths. He's had the max calpol for 24hrs. I've tried and tried to get him to take piriton but he won't because of the taste. I'm out of ideasSad

You poor things. My experience is that with little ones you can get a gp to come to you - but I guess it’s dependent on your area and their availability. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will have some better advice soon. Flowers

HHH3 · 09/01/2019 04:31

Have spoken to the dr and he basically said that there's nothing I can do and to contact gp in the morning Sad

Hi @HHH3 how is your LO?

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2019 09:45

Stupid question alert! It is chicken pox and not shingles isn’t it? Just with the pain.

HHH3 · 09/01/2019 11:29

Morning! We've just woken up after he finally fell asleep again at 7. Just about to ring the gp. He says his back is a bit better but his mouth now hurts.

Definitely chickenpox - he's absolutely covered in spots.

Please get him seen. My ds was very seriously ill from sepsis on his back from chickenpox and it's sounds much the same to be honest. They definitely sound infected and the yellow pus thing isn't true, red and inflamed is infected.
Hope he's better soon.

Rowboat · 09/01/2019 11:40

Sorry, I mean not necessarily true. The infection could be under the skin.

HHH3 · 09/01/2019 11:46

Waiting for a Dr to ring me back.

Chicken Pox can be nasty. They might be able to give antivirals at the hospital? Common misconception that there is nothing that can be done for CP, there are treatment for bad cases. Absolutely don't want to scaremonger but some cases to need hospital treatment and it's good to get checked if your child seems to suffer worse than from the usual symptoms.

I would definitely take him in although you may as well wait for doctor to phone back first.

GobblersKnob · 09/01/2019 12:07

Hop they get back quickly. Do you have a walk in center nearby?

Myshinynewname · 09/01/2019 12:15

Thanks for letting us know, I’ve been worried about him this morning! Blush
Glad to hear he is feeling a tiny bit better.

HHH3 · 09/01/2019 12:17

I have to say the receptionist was the most sympathetic person I've spoken to so far. I think if she'd been able to help him she would've bless her!

There's a walk in about 20mins drive away but I can't get him there (or to the Drs) as I can't get him dressed.

The Dr last night did say the gp might be able to give him anti virals. Will see what they say when they call back.

GobblersKnob · 09/01/2019 12:34

You could always just wrap him in a blanket. No need to dress him if he'll find it distressing. Really hope he's on the mend soon, it can be such an awful illness.

HHH3 · 09/01/2019 12:48

He won't even let me do that. He literally can't stand anything touching his skin.

Just spoken to the dr. She wanted to see him but as I can't get him there she's prescribing a different antihistamine as she thinks he might be describing burning when he says it hurts. Just trying to find someone to pick up the prescription and get it filled.

ARandomPoster · 09/01/2019 12:50

If he's 6 I assume he's in a booster seat with an adult belt over his shoulder? So, although it isn't best practise, he could sit in the car leaning slightly forward so his back isn't in contact with the seat?

And there is no need to dress him. Jogging bottoms if you can, but no reason to cover his top (other than it being very cold today). If you take a blanket so the seatbelt doesn't rub, and a coat in case it feels very cold in the carpark could you get him to the walk in clinic?

He's at day 4 now and IME days 4-5 Are the worst. If you can get him seen now, and get any treatment he needs now, you will hopefully start to see an improvement soon.

GobblersKnob · 09/01/2019 12:53

If it were me I'd take him to be seen, it's awful when you have to do things like that but occasionally you just have to accept it's in their best interests, which in this case I think it is. It's precisely because his reaction is so extreme that I think he should be seen.

LittleSwede · 09/01/2019 12:58

Agreeing with two previous posters to try and get him seen even if he finds getting in the car distressing. Hope he feels better soon, poor thing.

Walkthroughthefire · 09/01/2019 13:06

I don't know if this is the same but I had shingles and it attacks the nerves and is agony. As it's the same illness could this be happening? I was prescribed acyclovir (spelling?) tablets to clear it up. Hope he's ok. It's so worrying and upsetting to see them in pain, hope you're ok too

Believeitornot · 09/01/2019 14:56

You need to take him in!

Yes he’ll scream blue murder but it could be worse....

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2019 15:43

In their medical opinion the GP said he needs to be seen. You need to find a way to get him seen.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 09/01/2019 15:52

I'm not trying to be scary or goady here, but I know a child who died from chickenpox. Please don't take it too lightly.

todaytomorrownextweek1 · 10/01/2019 09:24

How is he today? Did he sleep last night? X

HHH3 · 10/01/2019 11:29

Thanks for asking. I think he's now over the worst. He was quite restless at times and woke up a few times but a much better night last night. And the spots are starting to scan over now. He's still sore but definitely better than he wasSmile
