Universal Credit advice needed

FacingUp · 08/01/2019 10:49

My DF had to stop work suddenly in October (self employed) due to ill health he’s waiting on a decision on a claim for PIP at the moment and has been told by CAB he can’t make a claim for universal credit until his PIP has been decided. Does anyone know if that’s correct?
He and my DM have been scraping by week to week with the help of myself and my DB giving as much as we can but obviously it’s a very stressful situation for them.
PIP takes a very long time to be processed; up to 3 months apparently and even longer if he needs to appeal, it’s such a long time to wait with zero income, DM needs to be available to care for my DF so is unable to take on work at the moment but is also unable to claim carers allowance until there is a positive outcome with DF’s PIP claim.
It’s all very confusing and stressful for them as you can imagine, any advice please?

At least. My DSis just had a review. It took over 6 months from the review form going in to getting the decision.

Pip is different from UC it's an in work benefit.
If they are in a UC area he needs to start his claim asap.
Have they confused it with carers allowance?
Does dm work?

MsFrosty · 08/01/2019 10:52

Christ no he needs to make a claim asap. However he maybe able to claim ESA new style so it's worth checking that as well

I’m not sure TheQueef it’s their first time claiming any sort of benefit so it is a possibility they may have confused themselves!

MsFrosty
They are mid 50’s and own with an interest only mortgage, my DB and I are managing to cover the payments between us each month.

DM was doing agency work to top up their income up until DF became unwell.

He needs to claim now, pip for my son took 6 months till assessment another 5 months for the consideration to be turned down and apparently were looking at a year and a half for tribunal Angry

Local carers trust can do a welfare check. But make a claim for uc today and then check whether it's worth claiming ESA new style

FacingUp · 08/01/2019 11:39

Thank you all I’ll let them know now

Pip is for working and non working, on top of wages etc.
UC or ESA is to replace wages, they desperately need to claim the out of work benefits because the pay delay (5 more weeks) could really cause difficulties.

Good luck to you all Facing I honestly think the system has in built pitfalls for inexperienced claimants. The very people who should be safe in the safety net.

As far as i know its the other way round, UC first then PIP
At least that is what my son has had to do, PIP takes ages, but so does UC he needs to get proper advice from the job centre i think
UC takes weeks anyway, he needs to put a claim in NOW
