Holey jeans in children

When your child (under 10) goes through the knees of their jeans do you

A) get them to wear it with pride
B) patch it up underneath
C) accept defeat and throw them out

Ds1 is terribly hard on his trousers. They always wear through before he grows out of them. Normal trousers I would patch or chuck but jeans are different aren't they? These ones are orange so difficult to colour match the denim for a patch.

Can an 8yo get away with an artistic hole in the knee or is that reserved for moody teenagers and grown ups?

Contrasting patch looks cool anyway

Pascha · 08/01/2019 09:56

Does it? He might have agreed at 4 but I'm not sure he'd be to keen on it now.

C. But keep them and sew a patch on the inside of the new pairs knees to prevent recurrence.

My 10 year old buys the jeans like that in the shop!

Yokohamajojo · 08/01/2019 10:38

I used to use those iron on jeanspad on the inside, then you just get the cool worn look on the outside Smile my ds2 is the same, goes through so many trousers and he is now almost 10

goldengummybear · 08/01/2019 10:53

My teens pay for ripped jeans.

DelurkingAJ · 08/01/2019 12:19

Patch if the legs are wide enough for me to use my sewing machine. But from the inside of marching was a problem. Maybe zigzag stitch in that case to stop fraying?

OutPinked · 08/01/2019 12:24

People pay £40 for ripped jeans in top shop/man. Just rock the rip.

Pascha · 08/01/2019 12:25

I think I'll go with an inside patch of as near a colour as I can find then. The hole will get bigger very fast and definitely become unwearable soon if I leave it as the material around the rip is quite worn.

My 5 year old loves them with a small rip but then once the rip gets larger with knees right out we get rid!!

GOTBackThisYear · 08/01/2019 12:53

I bought some overpriced brand name kid's jeans once and they had holes in them but the holes had tartan fabric patches underneath. They looked pretty cool tbh. So that's what I started doing with DS jeans when they got holes in.

BlueChampagne · 08/01/2019 12:57

A or B.

Have a look at Lands End Iron Knee jeans for the future?

GOTBackThisYear · 08/01/2019 12:57

Holy shit I just googled tartan patched jeans. Who the hell would pay this much for jeans?!?! Especially as my home patched ones look far better!

Those tartan patches look horrifying Shock. I think ds1 would rather go naked. I dont mind a near match or slight jar poking through but thats aa large step too far for us.

Throw them out.

Pascha · 08/01/2019 13:58

But he loves them so much. Orange jeans aren't exactly easy to find without spending lots.

Ha ha, they really are an ugly monstrosity aren't they? And for over £500??? Eeek. If you can find a good colour to match and patch underneath they can look great. Have a good look round and see what you find. You can fray the edges a bit to make them look a bit more... intentional too.

ChilliMum · 08/01/2019 14:15

A every time. Ds is 8 and if I threw them out he would have no trousers. Once the hole is so big he can get his knee through they are relegated to 'we aren't going anywhere or seeing anyone today' jeans Grin

SheepyFun · 08/01/2019 14:18

D) Turn them into shorts which he can wear next summer (if you're a lot better with a needle than I am!)

Pascha · 08/01/2019 15:11

Could get my mum to do that but not in January.
