blackface on facebook!

Absolutely fuming but not sure what to do. An old school associate's (NOT FRIEND) pic just came up on my newsfeed on fb, he is tagged wearing a turban and bindi. He's surrounded by people in actual blackface. One is wearing a Native American headress, a number wearing Indian outfits. A number of them with brown paint all over their faces. Kids also dressed up - one of the kids is pulling another kids eyes to look like 'chinky' eyes (please excuse the expression but trying to convey the racist sentiment). I'm Asian and am appalled. They were costumes from some kind of weird racist new years eve party. They were all in their 40's but the pics looked straight out of the 70s. Was tempted to share the photos and name and shame as the person whose party it was had it on a public setting but decided against it as kids involved. I don't know the person whose party it was or who posted the photos but find them deeply offensive. Wwyd?

Block and move on.

I’d definitely say something.

sooooooonowwhat · 08/01/2019 00:10

IAmAlwaysLikeThis - agree not sure who to say it to - very happy to say something to the guy who is tagged (who I know) but feel like I should say something to the person who posted the pics and clearly feels there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

I’d just say something about how racist it comes across as. They’ll probably say something about how ‘professionally offended’ you are or some shite.

Huffleypuff · 08/01/2019 00:15

It’s no more okay to use the phrase chinky eyes than to dress with black face.

Shame on you

sooooooonowwhat · 08/01/2019 00:15

Yes, I think I need to calm down and get some sleep but will say just that to the guy I know. He was a bit of a jack the lad at school now that I think of it, used to say things that would be considered pretty off now to be provocative but I always thought he was harmless. I presume there's no point in trying to contact the person who posted the pics? I don't think they would see my message anyway as it would go straight into their spam folder as we're not friends.

Huffley I think you're missing the point, possibly on purpose. I was trying to say that's what they were obviously trying to get across.

Huffleypuff · 08/01/2019 00:18

I’m really not missing the point. Casual racism towards people of SE Asian descent is apparently so much more acceptable even today.

You’re hear complaining about racism but then use a very racist phrase completely unnecessarily yourself.

PickAChew · 08/01/2019 00:19

Comment g "vile" tKes no effort. Then you can block and move on.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 08/01/2019 00:20

puff totally disagree, context is important

sooooooonowwhat · 08/01/2019 00:20

That is not at all what I meant to do and if it came across that way then genuinely apologise. It would be great to hear your thoughts on what I should do re the racism towards multiple races in the facebook post.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 08/01/2019 00:20

China isn’t in SE Asia, last time I checked.

Huffleypuff · 08/01/2019 00:23

Plenty of SE Asian countries including the one which my family come from have “Chinese” facial characteristics. No need to be pedantic.

OP. Comment on the post that you are utterly disgusted in such a racist photograph then delete and block the offender

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 08/01/2019 00:27

It’s hardly pedantic. Just say East Asia.

Married into an Asian family, it’s a pretty commonly used phrase, as in ‘mum, someone at school did chinky eyes at me.’ No it’s not a nice phrase but it conveys the racism inherent in that gesture. It’s v different to saying ‘he is a chinky’ or something. What else are you supposed to say ‘did a gesture where he pulled his eyes to the side to make them look typically Asian.’

sooooooonowwhat · 08/01/2019 00:29

Thank you for articulating that IAmAlwaysLikeThis - I did feel that there's no way to describe what they were doing that doesn't sound offensive because what they were doing WAS offensive. Regardless Huffley genuinely, didn't mean to offend and sorry if I did.

Report to Facebook. Block and move on.

Thymeout · 08/01/2019 00:38

They have deliberately done this to get a reaction.

Don't give them one.
