I am new and have come in as middle management in a team of about 10 people. Before Christmas I bought everyone on my team a box of chocolates, the name of which had relevance to one of the projects we had all worked on. I gave everyone their chocs at the same time at our Christmas lunch, however the ultimate manager (A partner at the company and the person who ultimately hired me) did not attend unexpectedly.
I ended up leaving his chocs in his office with a note attached just saying “thanks for giving me this great opportunity, happy Christmas.” He didn’t return to the office until today once we were all back at work and now he’s being slightly funny with me. He’s not said thank you, even though I have interacted with him a lot today, and he’s not been able to look me in the eye for more than a second. He obviously doesn’t realise that I gave the wine to the whole team and is perhaps wondering why I gave him a present (maybe I’m reading too much into it.)
I left work and received a phone message from him asking if I’d like to work with him on a “special project.” I’ve never worked alone with him before so this is quite unusual.
I need to find a diplomatic way of saying I gave one to everyone don’t I? How would you say it? Especially considering he has not thanked me yet either!
