Just passed a large blood clot, on my period. Should I be worried?

I get very heavy periods. As a result of this, I take the pill for 3 consecutive months and then a weeks break.

This period has been particularly heavy. A super plus tampon lasts an hour and a half at the worst points.

Anyway, I've just been to the toilet and when I wiped there was a clot about the size of a 50p. I've had clots before but this one was definitely bigger.

Is this likely a result of the fact I'm not taking a break on the pill for 3 months? I literally feel week & queasy since it happened 😰

I would say it's happened because you haven't taken a break for 3 months. It's okay to do that occasionally but not just because of heavy periods. Drink plenty, lay down and go to the dr in the morning. You need different treatment for your periods.

fatpatsthong · 06/01/2019 22:40

Not a dr and second the idea of going to the gp but in itself I wouldn't be mega concerned at a 50p size clot. I tend to have short, stop starty periods and my clots are often this size on a heavy month.

But if unusual for you/you feel unwell then do get it checked.

Fairylea · 06/01/2019 22:42

I pass clots like that all the time on my period and doctors aren’t concerned but if you don’t feel well or start soaking through pads then seek medical advice.

I was actually advised to take the combined pill for 3 months before having a period break indefinitely (ie forever) due to anaemia issues so it’s fine to do this long term but sometimes apparently you do get breakthrough bleeding when you first start doing it.

Not a doctor, but was told years ago that if it's bigger than your thumb you should get medical advice. 50p sounds ok but as fatpatsthong said if you're worried get it checked.

Coxie2006 · 06/01/2019 22:49

OP I can sympathise, this happens every month. Drs not overly concerned just prescribed tranexamic acid. Hope you feel better soon x

abbsisspartacus · 06/01/2019 22:49

Old or new size 50p? Old size maybe a concern new not so much

FissionChips · 06/01/2019 22:53

It's okay to do that occasionally but not just because of heavy periods

Why is that? Most women I know who take the pill run them continuously for years. I thought the period you get when on the 7 day break is just a withdrawal bleed.

50p doesn’t sound too bad, if you’re getting lots of them that size then I’d go to the nurse or gp.

I've told so many doctors about my heavy periods and it's just not taken seriously! I'm always anaemic. When my periods are at their worst, I'm setting alarms to change tampons & towels (yes both) throughout the night! If i don't, my bedding, mattress protector, mattress would be ruined! I nearly passed out the other morning when I woke up after a night of heavy bleeding and I had to forewarn my daughter that I may pass out and then get myself downstairs and eat chocolate to get some sugar in me.

It's getting frustrating, the doctors never seem to have any suggestions other than to take the pill for 3 months continuously. In the GP's words, "I'm sure you'll be able to manage it 4 times a year"!

I suggest getting a coil fitted. It's life changing. Free of periods and clots. Best thing ever.

abbsisspartacus · 06/01/2019 23:52

Tell your doctor no you actually can't manage 4 times a year quite frankly im appalled drs think its in anyway acceptable for some one to be aneamic and pass out bleeding like a stuck pig as it's only "4 times a year" fuck that for a game of soldiers go moan your arse off at them

abbsisspartacus · 06/01/2019 23:54

I mean it's 2019 and women still have to do this 🤦‍♀️

EBearhug · 06/01/2019 23:58

I agree. Can you fond a more reasonable GP?

I am in my mid-40s and a 50p clot is nothing for me - but it's not usual for you, so you should get it checked. By a good GP who takes periods seriously.

potatoscone · 06/01/2019 23:58

New 50p's have been here for 20 years Grin

blackcat86 · 06/01/2019 23:59

Could they not change you to the mini pill so that you take it consecutively without a break? I used to take cilest and had awful bleeds during my 7 day break. After the birth of my daughter I was prescribes cerezette because I was still expressing. I'd never to back regardless. I haven't had a period the whole time I've been on it and when I finish a pack i just start a new one indefinitely.

abbsisspartacus · 07/01/2019 00:02

Told you I was old 🤣🤣🤣

EnidButton · 07/01/2019 00:04

Effing hell that's a disgusting way to treat you. Unfortunately a common attitude towards women's pain by the medical world and it's so so wrong. Flowers I heard someone call it medical gaslighting recently and I think that's right. Like you'd make the pain up ffs!

Can you change gp practices? Try to see someone different? I know how hard it is but surely there's someone who'll listen properly.

For what it's worth I've often passed clots that big and in the past my periods were very heavy. I have a couple of small harmless fibroids that might've contributed to that but I'm not sure. The clots cause bad cramping as they come out but nothing to be concerned about by themselves.

I really hope you find a gp with done sense. Sorry you've had to put up with this. It's not right. Flowers

EnidButton · 07/01/2019 00:07

Somehow missed the passing out part. Definitely find a gp and demand blood tests. If you're anaemic they can prescribe you the right amount of supplements that could help. No way should they be ignoring that.

LtJudyHopps · 07/01/2019 00:14

I second the mini pill, I had 1 bleed when I switched from combined and haven’t had one since (9 months or so). Although I’ve had a few side effects (didnt have any on combined) so I’m hoping to try a different brand to the one I’m on now.

PFB1 · 07/01/2019 00:24

I'm going to go back to the doctors. It's a bit sole destroying when they don't offer any good suggestions but hopefully this time will be different. It's a different GP every time at my place so I'm sure it'll be someone new.

Unfortunately I've tried the mini pill and I still bled on that 👎🏻 and it could happen any time which was an issue for me as I like to go swimming etc which I personally can't on my periods (due to the heaviness).

Hopefully there's something we can try.

Ask the gp for tranexamic acid, it lessens flow.

Also, I assume you’re ok with hormonal contraceptives and are not trying to conceive as you’re on the pill, could you get an implant? I had Implanon for 5 years in total and it was the best thing ever! No periods, no pain (and mine are horrific, I can’t stand up straight. Am having endo investigations). Only came off it to try to conceive.
