Anyone have a very imaginative 8 or 9 year old?

I’m just wondering if my son is unusual or not. He is 9 and has autism. He is very imaginative and loves talking about imaginative things. A lot of children I know of that age seem to be more grounded in reality.

At the moment he is always talking about some creatures created in his imagination. He has lots of different names for the different types and will talk about each one’s special powers and their habitat. He pretended he had made a documentary about them and wanted me to sit down and watch it- really we were just looking at a poster in his room - he was commenting on it as if there was a wildlife documentary playing of the creatures. I know he would be upset if I said the creatures were not real altbough he doesn’t speak about them too much in school as he gets that the other children might not understand. He insists he wants to visit the place where they live on his holidays and sometimes I wonder if he knows they are not real. I think deep down he knows they are make believe but he kind of convinces himself otherwise.

Is this behaviour uncommon at this age?

My NT daughter is also 9 and seems to spend half her life in a fantasy world!

Your son sounds lovely.

Yes its quite common and beautiful. Never say they are not real. When you watch a movie or read a book its not real but still very engaging. Encourage him and listen. He sounds fab.

My 9 year old sounds similar although no ASC diagnosis. She plays very differently to her friends and never needs a toy because it’s all in her head. She does love toy animals and definitely believes they have feelings.
