Doing up DD14's bedroom - any ideas?

Just that really. How do we make it lovely?

Also I saw a post here last week where someone had put up a beautiful wallpaper with horses on it and would love to be reminded where it came from.

All ideas so welcome!

At 14 I just let them come up with their own plan within reason.

TraineeCrone · 06/01/2019 20:00

At 14 I expect she has ideas,do it without her input and she will be obliged to be a typical teenager and hate it.

Look up Teen bedrooms on Instagram for ideas

Agree she should have an input, but if I had free reign, I’d go white or grey walls with a feature wall with this wallpaper.

All furniture as a glossy white with a small desk/dressing table. Lamps/accessories in rose gold/copper. Bedding in white/grey/blush accents.

Storage, storage, storage!!

They need a bed (and want the bugger the better) and anpoace for everything. Hooks for hairdryers, shelves or something for makeup, a desk area, and a wardrobe. Create a place for everything! That's my advice.

BackforGood · 06/01/2019 20:13

Like the first two posters, my first response was 'what does she want?'

Starlight90 · 06/01/2019 20:21

My 14 yr old has minty blue/greenwalls, floral curtains and the birds shades from Dunelm. White painted pine too.

Inniu · 06/01/2019 20:30

My two 14 year olds are currently getting their rooms done. They have researched everything themselves online and have Pinterest boards. One has pink, cream and grey with some gold accents the other is having grey and blue with dark woods.

Ivegotthree · 06/01/2019 21:17

Thanks all! She's not too bothered, and I'm rubbish at interior design, hence the post.

Thank you

My 13yo DDs room. She'd hate pink/glitter etc

Take her to IKEA.

My dd has this wallpaper

On all walls as she hates feature walls apparently. Plain carpet and a dark teal Roman blind (large window so breaks it up). I wasn't convinced but she was and it actually looks fab. Plus lots of storage.

This is a lovely horsey wallpaper. My friend has just used it.

sirmione16 · 07/01/2019 00:31

Go with something "grown up" definitely. At this age, they think they are, and also means you won't need to re do it too soon!

Not being funny, if she "isn't bothered" then why re do it at all?

Ask her to at least get some ideas or go have a look at paint colours and wallpaper and then come up with a theme based on that.

potatoscone · 07/01/2019 00:32

There is a group on Facebook called DIY on a budget. It's not all strictly budget and it's not all crap. People post pics of their rooms all the time, worth joining for inspiration.

Ivegotthree · 07/01/2019 10:47

Thanks all again, much appreciated. Lovely horse wallpaper, thank you

We have to redo it as the room is a state, cracked plaster etc, and the ensuite is similarly revolting and old and leaking into the room below. It's a big job and we've been saving up for ages to do it properly.

She needs to design it herself (use the IKEA online tool) and set her a budget on the wallpaper. If you don't, she'll get the £40 per roll stuff. Try and steer her away from solid purple walls. Good luck, have fun.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 07/01/2019 11:00

Bed should not be a queen size btw, unless you fancy finding half a dozen dirty plates every wash day.

sirmione16 · 07/01/2019 12:34

@DisgraceToTheYChromosome I had purple walls at 14 Grin

Butterfliesandbluebells · 07/01/2019 12:46

We have just done DD’s room (13), her choices were .... cream wooden Venetians, Ikea furniture - I insisted on wood rather than mdf so she went for Hemnes white stained stuff including a really useful storage thing, desk, drawers, bookcase, bedside table (she has a walk in wardrobe in there).

Dulux heritage clear skies on the walls, we need to do the floor, I think she wants some sort of light/white wood effect LVT but we need to look for it first.

She has a cream vintage cast iron bed.

I think it looks bright and modern, not what I would choose but I can imagine it being repainted with new handles in a few years and her being happy with it for a long time.

implantsandaDyson · 07/01/2019 12:46

My 13 year old has been organising her room, doing bits up lately. Her walls are a light grey colour, all her furniture, shelves etc are from IKEA. She had brightly coloured hooks for headphones, hats, small rucksacks etc. Her latest thing is film posters framed. She was in a friends house over Christmas and coveted her room. I think it's mainly classic film posters (black and white ones). She has lots of storage.

Ivegotthree · 12/01/2019 14:11

Ha Disgrace love the advice!

Thanks all posters, v helpful. Agree storage
