Do you have a shoes off rule in the house

So do you have a shoes off/socks off rule at the door. Personally in my house it's like this
Shoes are ok in the house if they are clean

If your shoes are dirty then it's shoes off. For me and the DDs (15 and 11) socks are fine. For DH and DS(15) it's socks off as well although that is for a very good reason which I'd like to keep private. these same rules apply if your going upstairs.
So what are your rules like in your house and please no one judge me for my rules I get enough Judgy people in my local village

I let people use their common sense.

I'm all agog about the need for bare feet privacy.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/01/2019 16:50

Family who live here, shoes off.

Everybody else, shoes on.

SylvanianFamiliesNurserySet · 06/01/2019 16:51

We don’t have a rule. We have two indoor cats who make the place filthy anyway so I’m not bothered about shoes indoors. No wellies of course or anything dirty or muddyz

@ShatnersBassoon my shoes off rule is only because I've had dirty shoes Put horrible stains in my carpet before and so I don't take chances now. As for my DS and DH it's a reasonable reason behind it but I'm keeping it secret just because I'm aware they wouldn't really want it leaked

@SylvanianFamiliesNurserySet the shoes off rule only applies to people if their shoes are dirty. My husband and son can keep their shoes on if they want and they are clean it's just socks in the house I don't allow for them it's shoes or barefoot.

Shoes can be kept on downstairs (as long as they’re not obviously covered in mud or shit - my dog walking boots stay in the hall by the door) but none upstairs (unless I need to go and get something I’ve forgotten, but only in very clean shoes!). I’ve got hard floors and an incontinent dog downstairs, so I’m constantly mopping anyway, but upstairs is all fairly newly carpeted and I don’t want to have to do it again for a fair while.

Spilledmycoffee · 06/01/2019 16:56

Depends. When dd was crawling it was shoes off. Not so fussed now but I want the carpet professionally cleaned in the summer, and will be going back to shoes off until some other inevitable thing happens to make it filthy then I won't be fussed again. Rinse, repeat Grin

I'm never ott about it though. It's not a 'rule' as much as deciding what to say when people ask if I'd like them to leave their shoes at the door.

PineapplePower · 06/01/2019 16:57

Family must remove shoes at front door; guests can leave them on if they wish (we have comfy slippers, nice shoe cabinet to heavily encourage them to do so though ... )

DappledThings · 06/01/2019 16:59

Not a rule as such but we are all shoes off in all houses. It's just weird to me to do anything else. Shoes are for outside. I automatically take mine off in any house.

MeetOnTheledge · 06/01/2019 17:03

No rule, most people take them off but I wouldn't ask them to or drop any hints.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 06/01/2019 17:07

Socks or slippers in my house. If shoes have been worn outside then they will have some dirt on them, unless the wearer can levitate.

I don't understand why people want to wear shoes in the house anyway.

Hen2018 · 06/01/2019 17:07

No shoes in the house. Even though we have no carpets.

bigbluebus · 06/01/2019 17:08

We all take shoes off but I don't expect guests to do it unless their shoes are particularly wet/muddy. We used to have a wheelchair dependent person living in the house so they obviously couldn't take their wheels off! Since having a new light coloured carpet on stairs/landing I don't let people go upstairs with shoes on though.

I never understand people who insist that you remove shoes when they have a dog. The dog doesn't wear shoes so walks in exactly the same dirt/germs as a shoe wearer would!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 06/01/2019 17:11

For DH and DS(15) it's socks off as well although that is for a very good reason which I'd like to keep private.

I have so many questions about this. Why on earth do you have this rule? Why the fear about it being leaked? Do their socks smell? Is that why? Don’t their feet ever get cold from being barefoot all the time?

We once moved into a house where the previous owners had put down this really thick carpet in the whole house, and it all stunk of smelly socks. Awful. I bet that’s the reason, do you have very high pile carpets OP?

lanbro · 06/01/2019 17:11

Kids shoes off at the door, keep mine on unless muddy. I would never ask a guest to take theirs off, my friend does so I take slippers! I hate being in stocking feet tho so always either shoes or slippers, or flip.flops in the summer

Flossmequick · 06/01/2019 17:12

Shoes off.

SneakyGremlins · 06/01/2019 17:13

Shoes on, I don't care. I wear my shoes most of the day anyway.

FurzeandHarebells · 06/01/2019 17:15

We don’t have a rule.

In my experience all children automatically take their shoes off and some adults.

Other adults ask to which we say so whatever is most comfortable for them.

I wouldn’t expect anyone with actively dirty footwear to stomp across my house leaving muddy footprints though.

ShatnersBassoon · 06/01/2019 17:17

I don't understand why people want to wear shoes in the house anyway.

It's for their own comfort. I prefer guests to keep their shoes on for a few reasons: it is less of a faff and I hate the awkwardness of watching people removing and replacing shoes; some people don't like to uncover their feet or pad about in stocking feet (and I'd feel like a twat telling someone to put communal slippers on); I don't think there's a huge amount more grime trodden in by shoes that are visibly clean than by sweaty, dead skin-filled socks.

Cuntcuntcunt · 06/01/2019 17:17

why can't the men of the house have socks on?

ILiveInSalemsLot · 06/01/2019 17:18

Shoes off for everyone. Everyone assumes shoes off anyway so I haven’t really had any issues.

ilovepixie · 06/01/2019 17:18

For DH and DS(15) it's socks off as well although that is for a very good reason which I'd like to keep private.

If there is something wrong with their feet it's even more disgusting they walk about in bare feet!

Yulebealrite · 06/01/2019 17:19

yes

ILiveInSalemsLot · 06/01/2019 17:20

Maybe they have holes in their shoes so socks are damp and encourage fungus? Confused

Mayhemmumma · 06/01/2019 17:21

Defintely shoes off. I wish the kids school would implement it too...don't like to think of the class sitting together with dog muck and old chewing gum etc on their shoes.

I find it hard in my job to not take off my shoes when doing home visits but sitting in my tights feels a bit too familiar when I've come for a difficult conversation (I'm a social worker) and occasionally need to make a hasty exit!
