Dual nationality

I have dual nationality as was born in Australia to British parents by have been back in the U.K. a long time. I have a current British passport and my Australian one from when I travelled there in my twenties to see where I was born etc has long expired.

I’ve always assumed that I could just apply for a new one at any time just like my British one but I idea if this is correct. As I have DC now it’s suddenly occurred to me that perhaps they would also be able to have dual nationality by right of descent?

Does anyone know if this is correct? I have addedit to my never ending list of things I intend to do/check but probably won’t have to time to investigate properly for a while.

The passport websites are informative. I believe they would have a right to Oz passports. However, their children won't unless born there, unless your kids spend a stipulated time there.

We’ve looked into this extensively as I am British and DH Australian.

Your children are entitled to Australian citizenship by descent as long as you were an Australian citizen at the time of their birth.

Their children (your grandchildren) will not be entitled, unless your children live in Australia for two years plus before their children turn 18.

Ok brilliant thank you. I Don’t really understand what being an Australian citizen means? I was born in Australia and held an Australian passport for 10 years is that sufficient? I never renewed it as had no need but always assumed I would be able to if I wanted to.

Yes, you can renew your passport. Citizenship is not defined by whether you hold a current passport
