Slow cooker recipes - not casseroles

Springmachine · 06/01/2019 11:21

I have ended up with a slow cooker.

I don't eat casseroles so wondering what alternative things I can use it for.

Anything fun and tasty I should try?

Fakeaway kebab
Cowboy stew
Gammon in Cherry Coke
Your fave curry

Cook your Christmas Pudding in it, it will transform your life.

RedCabbageStains · 06/01/2019 11:26

Soup.

Gammon (I just put mine in with a drop of water).

Stewed apples (or any other stewable fruit).

Bolognese sauce.

Chilli con carne.

It would be easier if you told us what you do like to eat OP.

Stewed apples / pears sound perfect! I have some ginger in syrup that would work well with that.

Cowboy stew is a good idea as I tend to cook that sort of thing ina different guise now.

Can you do lasagna in a slow cooker?

We always cook things like chilli, curry and bolognese in ours but really need some inspiration.

Hunters chicken
Campfire stew
Beef
Spag bol,
Anything you like really

OP Your ginger syrup would be perfect with rhubarb, if you have some. I do a lot of rhubarb and ginger in the slow cooker in rhubarb season - it goes well on porridge, or with custard as a pudding.

I'm trying out a chicken fajita slow cooker recipe tomorrow.

Springmachine · 06/01/2019 11:57

@RedCabbageStains

Thanks ! Great idea.

Would I need to add water?

Paella works well in a slow cooker

Pixel99 · 06/01/2019 11:58

Will try the Hunters Chicken for DC,

RedCabbageStains · 06/01/2019 12:12

OP Yes, do add water - I cover the bottom of the slow cooker but not much more. If you have too much you can always leave the lid off and turn it up to high to reduce it a bit (otherwise I do fruit on low for an hour or two).

Big Can you link that fajita recipe? I find them too faffy to cook on a weekday evening, a slow cooker version would make it much easier.

Springmachine · 06/01/2019 12:15

Can I do anything like hot chocolate in it or is that just making more work for myself?

OP posts:
RedCabbageStains · 06/01/2019 12:22

Unless you want to keep a few litres of hot chocolate (or mulled wine) warm, I can’t see any advantage to doing it in the slow cooker.

You can also use it as a Bain Marie to melt chocolate, though.

This slow cooker mint aero bubble cake is pretty good

WhenDoISleep · 06/01/2019 12:31

I use it for hot chocolate on Christmas Eve - I don't know that there is any really advantage to it, I do it so it's one less thing to deal with on a busy day iyswim.
