Help Dad in hospital with sepsis - practical advice needed

Just found out my Dad is in hospital with sepsis, still in a&E but antibiotics started.

I’m going to the hospital with my mum soon, what should we take with us? What should we look out for (mum said it was skeleton staff and hard to get any attention - he’s still not been seen by a Dr) how long will he be in for? Sorry for the rubbish grammar etc but I’m shaking and rushing!

I'd take overnight things, I have had sepsis and was in hospital, I could barely open my eyes to go to the toilet I was that ill but if I'd wanted anything bringing in it would have been PJs & toothbrush/toothpaste.

I hope your dad is ok x

Thinking of you both and hoping he's settled for the night. It will be hard to take it easy if he's in an active job, but he'll have to be patient.

My mum had sepsis this year and was in hospital for months she was very very ill. The antib he’ll have at the moment will be a general all rounder until they find out what bacteria they’re fighting - this will take 2-3 days to grow. Weekly they’ll probably change the antib as it will stop working. Please read up on sepsis recovery. My mum is 3 months out of hospital and still struggling with tiredness and her memory is terrible.

Thanks both, he was finally found a real bed yesterday evening and they have a theory as to what it is. Hoping to see him later today.

DGM had sepsis at 80, and survived, just, but was left with some permanent health effects and was quite fit before but noticeably more frail afterwards and never got back to 100% of where she was. Mind you, she's still alive 18 years down the line!

If your DF is a farmer he is presumably in good shape, but you should be aware that this sort of thing is possible.

Being given antibiotics in an emergency department doesn’t actually mean he has sepsis. It means he has triggered scores on the sepsis screen and they will treat for sepsis until proven otherwise. Most people don’t have sepsis.
Full blown sepsis is very unpleasant but most people who start on the pathway are later found to just have a urinary tract infection or chest infection.

My son had sepsis and was in hospital for 4 days. He only had drops whilst in resus, then went onto 4 hourly (I think) antibiotic injections though his cannula.

Hope your dad gets better soon.
