Day case operation - eating advice

Hi

Posting for traffic really.

I've got a NHS day case op coming up. I'm on the afternoon list,12:30.

I can eat up to 7:30am and drink clear liquids until 11:30. Then nothing, not even gum.

Should I wake up early and have a big breakfast? If so, what? I hate feeling hungry, it makes me really lightheaded so I'm just worrying (sorry to sound pathetic!!)

And

What do I do with my stuff, eg phone, will there be lockers do you think?

I don't know whether to go to work in the morning either to keep me busy or just potter at home!?! Questions questions!

TIA for your help xx

Yes, there will be a safe place for your belongings but don’t take too much.

Eat as normal in the morning. They will feed you (sandwiches usually) before you go home to make sure you haven’t had an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic (rarely happens but is on checklist anyway).

You’ll be fine 💐

Surgical Nurse here. Get up a bit earlier. have breakfast- doesn’t need to be huge just something you fancy. Clear fluids includes water, squash and black tea and coffee so have what you fancy of that. Take your phone, a charger just in case, a spare pair of pants (for emergencies 😏). They will keep them all safe. Take the morning off to chill and hopefully it’ll be quick and easy and you’ll soon be home!

@Returning2thesceneofthecrime thank you! I'm getting quite nervous now and have a million questions flying round my head all of a sudden 🙈

@Ponsietta100 ah thanks so much for the advice! Didn't think about phone changer and undies!

If possible, a phone charger with a super long lead so that you can charge while you’re in bed without leaning over the side and injuring yourself!

I wouldn’t got to work before, but then round here you have to allow 1 and a half hours just to park at our hospitals, so between that and the actual travel time I’d probably be at work for about 15 minutes!

@Namechangeforthiscancershit
Good idea re long cable charger!!!! 💡

I live very nearby so will walk but that's a good point for anyone else in the same position reading this! It's horrendous at our local hospital 🙈 people must constantly be late for their appointments!!

It’s a nightmare. And then of course when you get lucky and find a space really quickly you have an hour and a bit to browse in the crappy Smiths bored out of your mind!

I would take a snack and a drink in case they don't offer anything, they didn't at the hospital I had my op at. I was told to fast from 5am and didn't go in for surgery until 5pm, so was absolutely ravenous after and felt too light headed to stand and queue for food in the cafe. I took a rucksack to store my clothes in as I had to strip off down to my waist and valuables could be stored in an office area.
